andyt andyt:
Or anomie.

I had no idea what that word meant. "a state or condition of individuals or society characterized by a breakdown or absence of social norms and values." It articulates something I didn't know there was a word for. Thanks.

I don't think we're there yet (anomie). Actually, in many ways the Millennials are the most Puritan generation in quite some time. "No sex please, we're Millenials." You saw it here first.

Agreed. Millennials are actually very repressive people with highly complex social rules that would make Emily Post look on in wonder.

Too many of them were raised in such a coddled condition, thanks to things like the political correctness of the early 1990's and the moral panic their parents were in over Satanic child molester cults that the scolds thought were everywhere, that the sheltering they received really crippled a lot of them. That's why they're so serious and extremist about things at college now that offend or "frighten" them. Didn't do any of them any favours by coddling them like that. College is their last stand because their employers after graduation aren't obligated to cater to any of that sissy crap.

N_Fiddledog N_Fiddledog:
There's an interactive map at the Washington Post. It's from 2014 and shows all the countries where the Post claims you can get the death penalty for homsexuality.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wor ... -by-death/

Iran
Saudi Arabia
Iraq
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Yemen
Sudan
Somalia
Nigeria
Mauritania

Let's put our thinking caps on and try to guess what all these places have in common. Hmmm...

(Sorry Beave and Andy, I ran my cursor over Bart's home state for you, but it's not listed. :P )

Hmmm, given that most if not all of the countries listed have laws that state a "Muslim" man or woman might be executed for being homosexual the easiest solution for gays in those countries would be to tell the authorities that they've renounced their Muslim faith.

Easy, peasy, now you're a non Muslim so no issue.................................. Oh wait. ROTFL

The Division of Labor In Society Emile Durkheim, 1883. He said it was happening then.

$1:
Durkheim's theory was based upon the idea that the lack of rules and clarity resulted in psychological status of worthlessness, frustration, lack of purpose, and despair. In addition, since there is no idea of what is considered desirable, to strive for anything would be futile.

In criminology, the idea of anomie is that the person chooses criminal activity because the individual believes that there is no reason not to. In other words, the person is alienated, feels worthless and that their efforts to try and achieve anything else are fruitless. Therefore, with lack of any foreseeable alternative, the person falls into criminal activity.

It's awful that homosexuality is considered a crime worthy of the death penalty in so many places.

It's bad enough that until not that long ago it was considered a mental disorder, even in the western world.

Islam needs a reformation, unfortunately I don't think there is much of en enlightened Islamic top figure who could lead it.

Christianity moved out of their dark ages, Islam needs to move out of theirs.
