Canada Kicks Ass
Superpower?

OK I realise this might seem a little offbeat for a politics forum (if the Moderators know a better place move it right away!), my question more of a fanatasy, it's also a bit of research for my writing.
Alright lets say that people begin to appear across the country /world with superpowers (I'm not talking political), at first alot of them are robbing banks and convenience stores and stuff. Then these "superhumans" begin to fight with each other one side opposed to the "normal" human authority and one protecting that authority ("bad" and "good" ) .

here comes the question
What kind of action by the goverment would you support? The Government taking them in and using them as a weapon of the future? Co-existance? Annihilation?

Thanks for entertaining this idea

I can honestly say I don't know. I can say Co-existence but I can also see that if things really got nasty extermination might be the only option.

If you want you can try to find the "Rising Stars" graphic novels by J. Michael Straczynski. It deals with that same question, sort of.

I don't know if anyone hear listens to, Coast To Coast A.M with George Norrie, but they were talking about that very subject the other night. But it was about how in the future humans will be so genetically manipulated for super strength and intelligence that there will actually be a supirior race whice will overthrough the infidels! It was really quite interesting.

ABSOLUT_SS @ Thu Aug 21, 2003 7:54 pm

...a little too abstract a question for SS. Will have to drop a couple of tabs of purple mike, throw on some Hendrix & Joplin, fire-up the lava-lamp and think about it, get back to ya...

William Gibson a Vancouver base scifi novelist wrote Neuromancer which brings about a similar point. In his novel the human mind can log on to the Internet (this book was a precursor to the Matrix and the Internet which makes his logic refreshing and kinda frightening). There is a subculture in the large suburbian "SPrawl" that has special "circuitry" which alows them to upgrade their brains, etc. Between this Neural prosthesis and genetic modification Gibson concludes that countries become obsolete and major corporations and "Artificial Intelligences" rule. This is a dimension I've been thinking of but I'm not sure of adding this to my writing.

...food for thought I'm sure KOOPS, but the depth of my sci-fi thoughts involve Traci Lords (after she turned 21), Ginger Lynn, and me on Air-Force One, with the stewardesses in business class pouring expensive wine on our happy bodies to keep us cool while we fuck, oh yeah, dressed up as martians too, on the way to drop the first & last nuke on QUEBEC!. Sorry, not much help to be had here...

Koopsta @ Tue Sep 16, 2003 6:12 pm

As interesting as your ideas about bombing Québec to kingdom come are... here's an idea to explore. In Amercian (U.S.) literature when writers explore visions of the future there's always a clear clean cut morally superior hero. In France they wonder what are we going to where and Britain isolation. Canadian literature has a theme of survival and even in Neuromancer you can see that (Case doesn't care what he does just so that he lives and suffers consequences). So who would survive in the neo-culture war?

the french made an entire movie about fashion in the future. wear.

...I noticed how you put an accent in the right place on the word "Quebec" Koops, I don't...& one of my favorite audio (music/stereo) magazines is published in King City, ON., believe it or not! I AM gonna check out some of the books/articles you posted though. And Becks, I'm so pro-American I make George Bush look lika a taliban sympathizer. This is a rough place to post pro-American ideas, don't I know! Ya can't change minds that are already made up, but I'm with ya dear, I'm with ya...
