Aircraft and missiles are handy to kick the shit out of someone, but invasions require actually landing troops. China remains unable to and any preparation would be obvious.
Plus that Pacific Fleet thing. China would need a wimpy, snivelling suckhole of a US President they could distract with a "wonderful, wonderful trade deal" on their side.

That was true 20 years ago, but it's no longer true - China has a large flotilla of amphibious assault ships:

They also have a sizeable force of Marines and airborne troops (almost 40,000 troops, or roughly equal to one third of the Taiwanese Army), so they could easily force a landing and reinforce it afterwards with conventional Army troops.

The only military obstacle keeping the PLA off Taiwan now is the USN.

BoJo is making some serious threats here, mainly to Britain:

$1:
LONDON — Prime Minister Boris Johnson raised the stakes in a confrontation with China over Hong Kong on Wednesday, promising to allow nearly three million people eligible for a British overseas passport to live and work in Britain, if Beijing were to impose a new security law on the former British colony.

Mr. Johnson’s promise, made in a column in The Times of London, would open the door to a significant influx of people fleeing Hong Kong, should the situation in the city deteriorate further. But it left unanswered questions about how difficult it would be for those arrivals to obtain British citizenship.

Where's he going to put a fraction of that number on an island that already has a housing crisis?

I get it with Boris wanting the Hong Kong people to come to the UK. They're hard working, they love freedom, and most of them have a fuckton of money.

Canada should make an announcement soon on this. The NDP have been making a push for Hong Kong to be able to come here but the last update the Liberals are playing their cards close to the vest:

Happily Obama is now out of office.

Which happily cannot go farther than Taiwan.

Much better than the usual flotsam and planetary garbage they get.

Jimmy Lai knew this day would come if he stayed true to his principles:

And such a fate will await every critic of the Chinese regime across the globe if we don’t wake up.

That depends a great deal on how many take him up on his offer. The new Tory seats that used to be Labour in the Midlands and North of England are not exactly full of people demanding millions of immigrants from anywhere.
