United Church resolution is anti-Semitic, CJC says

At least one of the resolutions "urged the church to publicly state that the Palestinians must acknowledge Israel's right to exist and must stop suicide bombings and other violent attacks on the Israeli people."

$1:
The Canadian Jewish Congress says its relationship with Canada's largest Protestant denomination is in jeopardy because of resolutions to be debated at the United Church's general meeting next week.

Bernie Farber calls the four proposals anti-Semitic.

"Anybody that votes in favour of this, votes in favour of anti-Semitism," Mr. Farber, the group's chief executive officer, said in an interview.

Mr. Farber, as well as other congress members, are on their way to the United Church's general council in an effort to lobby the 400 delegates to reject the proposals.

The four resolutions are among 105 to be debated at the meeting in Kelowna, B.C.

They call on the United Church "to advocate a comprehensive boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions."

Another urges the church to "support the international campaign of boycott ... divestment and sanctions until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination."

Aren't these issues being "debated"? One may not like the tone or implications, but institutions like the United Church must be allowed to engage in open discourse regarding contentious issues. What's next? Vetting University political science curricula to meet any agenda? These are resolutions...

*Scratches head* I don't get what your statement has to do with the four other proposals.

Edit: Going to the original poster.

I think your point is well taken. It's just a resolution and they have not passed anything yet. But, for obvious reasons, this is a contentious issue that gets media play. Remember a similar resolution recently at a CUPE convention which got a lot of air time?

BTW, aren't there any other countries (like Iran or Burma) that they could be focusing on?

It seems strange to me that the people who appear to be defending the United Church in this uproar are the same ones that, are by nature left wing and continually want to keep church and state seperate.

Maybe they only mean seperate in Canadian politics, which allows them to mess with everyone elses?

How can it be an anti-semetic stance when Palestinians are semites too? [huh]

Odd but we refer to someone who is anti-Jewish as being anti-Semitic which is a clear misnomer. And the CJC is being taken to task for using the term anti-Semitic when they really mean anti-Israel.

Damage control. Once the delegates saw references to "ethnic cleansing" they knew they had to do something.

$1:
Delegates at the United Church of Canada's national meeting have voted unanimously to reject controversial language used in material for a proposed divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel.

Bernie Farber, chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, warned of an 'irreparable' schism between his organization and the United Church if delegates adopted a boycott resolution against Israel. Bernie Farber, chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, warned of an 'irreparable' schism between his organization and the United Church if delegates adopted a boycott resolution against Israel. The United Church is still considering the resolutions themselves, including a proposed boycott of Israeli organizations at this week's general council meeting in Kelowna, B.C., said church spokesman Bruce Gregersen.

But in a motion that deemed some of the wording "provocative, unbalanced and hurtful," delegates voted Tuesday to repudiate and regret background documents that raised the ire of Jewish organizations across the country.

Oh geez, if anybody ever questions anything that Israel does or points out wrong doing on their part, suddenly it's anti-Semitism.... OOoOooOOooooooo......

Yes, because everytime someone says something that doesn't kiss Israel's ass suddenly wants to kill all the Jews in the world at the same time.

Great way to get what you want all the time.

Honestly if it was some random black person who continually pulled the race card everytime they didn't get what they want or people question his actions..... everybody else would roll their eyes and walk away.

Yet when it comes to the Jewish and Israel.... Look out.... you better snap in line, support them without question and feel guilty for what happened to them during WWII, or else you're an anti-Semite and out to kill them all.

Sweet murciful cripes, when the hell is anybody going to stand up to this Cry-Wolf mentality and show these groups that they can't play the anti-Semitism card every damn time something happens that they don't like?

Oh I forgot, Jews and Israel are above all other humans and can't do any wrong..... and if they do, well it's because of what was done to them decades ago, so they're excused..... and somehow whatever was done to them in the past is somehow my and everybody else's fault.
