Ann Coulter’s ‘retard’ tweet says volumes about her
wow Xort normally I just ignore you but that lacks any kind of class whatsoever.
If you seriously can't comprehend why being called a "retard" is a form of insutling bullying then I don't know what to say.
If Ann had used the word fag or slut instead of retard I somehow think the point may have hit you over the head more directly.
This is simply a form of immature bullying and she should be called out on it.

John Franklin Stephens' letter to Ann Coulter:
She got SCHOOLED.
Maybe, I doubt the schooling that can be given by someone that uses baby talk.
I'm re-reading this trying to see if there's a way you could have meant it that wasn't as bad as what Coulter said. I haven't succeeded so far.
I listened to a CBC interview with Stephens this evening, and it didn't sound like baby talk to me.
Clarify if I'm wrong, but your comment appears pretty assinine.

Coulter's always good for a larf. She's the one who taught the joys of drunk-blogging to Pam Geller.
negative publicity is better than no publicity at all, especially if you're a spotlight-chaser like Coulter.
She make a lot of money being an aggravating bitch.

Especially coming from him.

It is ment to be an insult, identical in intent to calling someone stupid.

Words have meanings, fag means a homosexual, in our culture calling a heterosexual a homosexual is ment as an insult. If I called you a fag it is because I want to be mean to you.
Being mean to people is still a valid way to express your views about people.

At most I will agree she should be called out for being mean, not for the word she used.
Think about it like this, if you have ever said, 'wow you are stupid', you have said the contextual equal to 'you are a retard'.
The meaning of the words are: I don't like you and I want other people to know that I think you are not very smart.
The word used isn't nearly as important as the message it is trying to communicate.

Saying 'The r-word' is baby talk. Like going to a doctor and saying your wee wee hurts.

No, calling someone "stupid" isn't the same as calling someone a "retard", unless you think calling someone "black" is the same as calling them a "nigger". "Retard" and "stupid" may be somewhat synonymous, but there's a different level of meanness attached to "retard". It implies "worthless" and "helpless". "Stupid" people may be as "dumb" as "retarded" people, but there's more to the label "retarded". I've never called someone I thought was just "stupid" a "retard", but I've called a lot of smart people "retarded".

Let me break it down for you:
Maybe,
(this is me granting the possibility that the statement could be correct, but making an implication that I don't think it is likely)
I doubt the schooling that can be given by someone
(here I am saying that I do not have full confidence in the ability to school, or using the present active form schooling, by the person we are talking about)
that uses baby talk.
(and this is the justification for my doubts. That justification is that a person that uses child or baby talk, which is an incompleat form of communication sometimes used by babies or children that do not have a full command of the language. Such a person would be unable to educate [school], or in the actual meaning of the word used, show up and compleatly dominate via the action taken [SCHOOLED], a person for using language poorly.

When you call someone black, you might as well call them a nigger because you have selected their race as the identifying characteristic. You might think that saying black rather than nigger is a way to be polite and not be mean. However that is mostly modified and controled by the overall tone of the statement. If you are being positive and friendly saying nigger rather than black wouldn't change that you are not trying to be mean. Just like if you are making a negitive statement about someone and say black, everyone can read between the lines and understand what you mean is nigger with all the hate and anger that word commonly means.

Which realy ties into my statements about black or nigger above.
Ann has no love for a democrat. So she might say 'that not very wise person who is the current president', but everyone should read her actual meaning of 'that retarded liberal nigger'.
If she uses nice language that doesn't sound mean, unless she actualy means it in a friendly way she is just lying to be polite.
~
The issue at hand seems to be that people who are linked to people that are retarded do not like the name of the condition being used negitively. Well tough luck, being retarded is a negitive condition. When people want a word that sounds stronger than stupid they will use retarded or moron. (and then people linked with those who are actual morons will write snarky letters about that)
As I said in my first post when will people with mental illnesses start writing letter when people use the word crazy in a negitive light?

That's a whole lot of camouflage for a statement that was as ignorant and intolerant as anything Ann Coulter could say.
Let me tell you what the simple, accurate interpretation is for what you wrote.
"I doubt the schooling that can be given by someone that uses baby talk."
=
"Ann Coulter couldn't be schooled (shown up) by Stephens because he has Down's syndrome and therefore talks like a baby."
Read the letter again. Better yet, listen to the interview with Stephens. It'll be on the CBC website under "As It Happens" podcasts for October 24th. You think this would have been news if the man couldn't express himself?
It looks like you have a stereotype to revise, and an attitude that needs adjustment.

Did he say 'the r-word' or not? Having Downs doesn't force him to use that phrase.
He can express himself as much as he likes, people will use retarded as the mean form for stupid. He doesn't get to stop people from using retarded to be mean to other people.
Many times when a common form and a technical term overlap they don't mean the same thing, in this case it does.
If he has his feelings hurt or thinks that people using retarded in it's non technical meaning somehow hurts people with the medical condition of being retarded, well that's just silly.
~
People should like or dislike Ann for what she says not how she says it.
$1:

Given how poorly some people interviewed on the CBC do, I don't think just being on the air is a gold standard proof for being articulate.
Just the other day I listened to an interview with two party leaders on the radio. One of the leaders was a very good speaker all around, the other was terrible. You would think that someone in the job of the leader of a political party would be able to give a 10/10 interview.

Ok I'm going to take this one step at a time with you.
Language has more context then simple definition.
Someone asking me "Are you homosexual?" is going to get a different response then someone asking "Are you a fag?".
The reason is that socially the words homosexual and fag have different meanings and imply different points of view to the possible answers. One is a neutral question looking to get information. The other however is a provocation of disagreement towards the positive.
Calling someone a retard is very different from calling someone stupid in very much the same regard.
Does Ann Coulter have every right to say whatever you wishes? You bet but we also have every right to call her out on being the short sighted bully that she is.
Also for the record you would get the exact same reaction if she had called Romney a retard while siding with another Republican during the primaries.
