There's nothing I love more then reading a good book. I don't know about the rest of you but it's one of my favorite things to do. So I decided that it would be interesting to start a thread about books. Try to keep it to fiction please. Soooo....

GATES OF FIRE By Steven Pressfield

Gates of Fire is a historical novel that tells the story of the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopoyae during the Persian Invasion of Greece. The story is told by a Greek named Xeo who's village was destroyed in one of the many wars between the city states. He makes his way to the city of Sparta, who's military reputation is legendary, and their becomes the battle squire of a Spartan warrior. Through Xeo's eyes we get an inside look at Spartan society, harsh and brutal but at the same time with a streak of tenderness shown between comrades (after one battle the Spartans gather around their leader to mourn their lost comrades and they cry unashamedly). We also get a look at the role of Spartan women, often left alone for weeks at a time, and how they keep the city going. The battle scenes are well written and gives one sense of what Hoplite warfare was like. I would recommend Gates of Fire to anyone who like historical novels or just a good read.

Presently I am reading ROGUE WARRIOR by Richard Marcinko with John Weisman. It is interesting, my hubby read it and rather liked it. I am a big bookaholic. Anything historical, ancient history, military history it don't matter I love it all. Thanks for the reference, I'm going to go looking for Gates of Fire next time I'm at the library. :D

Anything by Douglas Coupland "Generation X", and my favorite "Microsurfs".
Another is Kurt Vonnegut, like "Slapstick, or Lonesome No More" and of course "Slaughterhouse–Five."

:P

I suggest reading, Once again, The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy... Its a funny book.. But it's also serious... I could not quit laughing while reading it... Which made it hard ;) Douglas toys with alot of things in this book, one of which is religon.. Some pokes he makes towards religon include a "bestselling Galactic Trilogoy, with the books, Who is this God Guy?, Where is this God now? and Gods Ten Greatest Mistakes." another thing he syas is on a distant planet is a 42 mile high message from our creator god, which basically says: "We apologize for the Inconveinience" ;)

I know I've read that book eons ago. But maybe I'll have to give it another go after I am done all the other books I have on the go. Besides Rogue Warrior I am reading The Lord of the Rings and the Mission Earth decology. 8O

Watch me be stoned... for adults; Harry Potter. It's a very amusing series.

Oh wait.. I forgot... this isn't a Christian board. HAH! I have not brought upon me my own death... or whatever.

Anything by L.Ron.Hubbard is good for Sci-fi fans. He makes fun of the cliches, and when he's not making fun he's making beautiful fiction.

I wouldn't honestly suggest J.R.R.Tolkien. He's long winded and a bit soulless... his ideas are wonderful, and his vision is grand, but he wrote as if he was writing a textbook, not a story.

I see you've also had run ins with people who spout "Their" christian views against "witchcraft" too, I see.

Well as for reading

I liked:
The god of impterinence - Sten Nadolny

Pilgrim - Timothy Findley - Actually I LOVED this book

I've read all of Ann Rice's books. If it's written by her I read it. I'm addicted. or possessed depending on your views.

A Heartbreaking work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers is pretty funny. At least I catch myself laughing out loud. I'm easily amused.

On a serious note I'm trying to get through "A very strange Society" by Allen Drury. As yet I have no opinion on it, course I'm only on page 10.

More serious reading I love Desmond Morris's books. The Naked Ape was rather illuminating..........

Stoned? Not at all, nic... Ive read at least two, and really enjoyed them - my wife has read all (4?) that are on the shelves in soft-cover, and I tweeked her Chrismas, by getting her the latest one in Hard-cover.
(thanks, Canadian govt, for your stupid rules that make hardcover books a basis for a second mortgage! )

TESTAMENT By Nino Ricci

Set almost 2000 years ago Testament is the story of Jesus (refered to as Yeshua) from a non-Christian perspective (ie. he appears as just a man and not the Son of God). The story is told by Judas (Yihuda of Qiryat), Mary Magdalen (Miryam of Migdal), his mother and the Greek sheperd Simon of Gergesa. Through Judas' and Mary's eyes we witness his teachings as he tries to reform the Jewish faith at the time and as Jesus, the man of peace, comes into dispuits with Judas, the hard core rebel. Through his mothers eyes we learn of his child hood, and finally through Simon's eyes we witness the crucifixion, an event that occurs because of Jesus' association with Judas, not because Judas betrayed him. Written by a Canadian, Testament is a book that any Christian or Agnostic should read.

Parke Goodwin's "Waiting for the Galactic Bus" and "The Snake Oil Wars" are excellent. "Darwin's Radio" is probably Greg Bear's best book so far. Turtle Dove's World War series. Anything by Bill Gibson. All of Hunter Thompson's books.

Right now I'm reading H.G. Wells' "The Outline of History." It's really amazing how much we've learned since he wrote it
