A man convicted of sexual interference with his 12-year-old granddaughter was released this afternoon and welcomed back to his native community, despite a previous conviction for incest in the same community.
$1:
The man, described as a "community elder," faced other charges involving other young girls, also his granddaughters, but those charges were dropped in an agreement between the Crown and defence.
The man was sentenced Friday to an 18-month jail term. But because he was given two-for-one credit for the nine months he has already spent in custody, he was released.
$1:
Judge Fred Sandhu and Crown counsel Mike Desautel agreed the man, who has previously served two years in prison for incest, continues to be a threat to young children

A man convicted of sexual interference with his 12-year-old granddaughter was released this afternoon and welcomed back to his native community, despite a previous conviction for incest in the same community.
The 58-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims, was convicted of one count of sexual interference for luring his granddaughter to a junkyard on the Wasagamack First Nation and pulling her pants down.
No sexual touching took place, and he eventually took the girl back home, the Provincial Court heard.
A letter submitted to the court by Wasagmack's chief and band council says the community supports the decision to have the man released and returned to the community of 1,120, located 471 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
Judge Fred Sandhu and Crown counsel Mike Desautel agreed the man, who has previously served two years in prison for incest, continues to be a threat to young children.
Sandhu called the case "very disturbing" and expressed concern for girls in the community.
"I hope there's someone keeping an eye on him," he said.
The man has been prohibited from having any contact with children under the age of 14, and barred from going anywhere children congregate, such as playgrounds and schools.
Here's the article in its entirety.
