Well, I don't know how many of you have thought of the idea, but I thought it would be interesting to see what the creative minds here could come up with for their own utopia. Pick a form of government, and you are given an island, and basically describe how you think life would be on your island and the law and whatever else you think is interesting about your country. Doesn't have to be all your idea either. You can incorporate ideas from books into one overall way of life for your island.

I don't know how many of you will waste the time to respond, but I think this could be fun to see some ideas for peoples utopias....

   

Well i would live in Newfoundland. We would have a socialist goverment with a large senate. No political parties, becasue they just divide people. hmmm

Healthcare and public education would be funded to the brim, nurses and teachers would be making 6 figures. We would use solar power to power EVERYTHING even the cars. All major bueisness would be federalized, including farms and power compaies.

Thats my dream.

MY island would be about the size of Austrailia, all but divided in half by a mineral rich mountain ridge that rivals the BC rockies. North would be a mild, somewhat dry climate. South would be a mild, somewhat humid climate. Everywhere there is an abundance of fresh water from the peaks. This enables us to grow almost every concievable crop, not to mention, raise all types of livestock. It also means, you could go surfing in the morning, drive like hell, and be snowboarding powder in the evening.

We also have a music/arts industry second to none.

There are EXTREME penaltys for crooked politicians, which is why we can get away with having government insurance, utillities, health care etc. and not worry so much about where our taxes are going. Cause if they f*ck up, we export them somewhere real ugly... like the states for example . That's after the extreme penalty.

Did I mention the female to male ratio is like 2 to 1?

   

Johnny, that's a good question. I'm along the thinking of Adam, but this is my idea.

There would be no money first and foremost. This will take down the elitist barrier; everyone would be equal. No rich, no poor, no middle class. How that would work, I haven't quite figured that out yet, but I don't think that technology or new ideas would just stop; man is curious; always will be. It would be boring though. No giant mansions, remember that barrier is gone now, crime would be down, and everyone works according to their abilities. For this, they get a roof over their head, food in the refridgerator and essential services; a telephone I consider an essential service. If they want more, guess what? They have to work more hours; no different than today, but at least now you don't have a ceo that only has to work for a day to buy a car, while others have to work a year or more.

There would be no more cars either! Mass transit would be the way in my world. Jeez, why settle for an island, guys? Busses, trains, trolley cars, etc.

The government would work on a yearly contract basis. We, the people, would determine what they would be paid, what they can use for expenditures, and we would determine how much money would be alotted to fund the programs in place. If, after one year, we are not happy with them or their performance, they lose the contract; any moneys that have not been accounted for, will be replaced by the outgoing government through their own pockets. The other parties can bid on the contract, including the one's that just lost it, and the best bidder wins it. The only way they can cut corners in their bid is with cuts in their salaries or expenditures. No cutbacks in social services whatsoever! The services in place will be reviewed by the people, and will have increases according to needs, inflation rates, etc. With that in mind, there would need to be at least 3 parties.

anyway, in my utopia, everything t odo with money would be backwards to what it is like in our world (bear with me, i haven't thought this out completely, its just an idea a friend and i had).
for example, instead of paying to go to school (eg tuition, books etc.) and then getting a job to get paid in order to live, one would get paid to go to school and then be required to pay in order to work. think about it, it would be an incentive to stay in school longer and have a higher education. but in that situation there would need to be a law that prevents unemployment.

Not as much as people think. Plus if every house had a solar pannel on top of it, plus fields on them, if the sun was out for just 10 minties a day TONS of engery would be colected, we would have a ton of stored energy. That town in germany uses all soalr energy, they have so much extra they sell what they dont use.

I would also tax diffrence things, like church, if u wanted to go to chruch u would have to pay a 'holy tax'..but there would be no tax on things like beer and cigs. Also, drugs would be legal, and guns illegal.

   

Hmm, I think I will take a stab at my own question. Well, on my island(I would prefer and island, because you can have a nice environment)everyone would work different jobs from the time they are born for life experience. People would do fishing, farming, woodcutting, planting of trees, and so on, all for the community. I would keep a population control, and people would only be allowed 1 kid, who the community would mainly care for so that the child would get used to community life. After a family has 1 child, they would have to be fixed.

Healthcare would be a job just like farming, and everyone would be allowed healthcare and education for free, as part of the community. The only methods of power would be solar power and wind power. No "junk" food would be on the island, and scientist would be looked up to like sports stars are. Marijuana and mushrooms and acid would be okay to do(mind expanding drugs)but there would be a written record of the mushrooms and acid done because people would only be allowed to do them 1-2 times a month. There would be no cars, only bikes and anything else that doesn't run off of fuel. Houses would be small, only 2 bedrooms at most, because people would only be allowed 1 kid, so no more bedrooms is needed, and they would be built in the most un-wasteful manner. Libraries would be everywhere, and everyone would be required to visit the psychologist to keep their mental health good. No guns would be allowed, and cops would only be armed with things like tazers or any other non-fatel insturments. The only job of the cops would be to stop any violent acts, such as if a rape happens or whatever else. Everyone would have freedom of speech, and the news would be controled by the government, but the government would be run by the people. There would be no ultimate leader, only a group of around 100 people who could debate issues, and anytime morals are brought into the case which go against things that hurt no one, they would be dismissed(such as anti-gay marriage, anti-marijuana, anti-profanity).

Freedom of religon would be excersised, and towers calling to prayer for muslims would be installed, and buddha statues, and churchs. Everyone would be equal, and religous people would be able to follow their religon, but they would not be able to inflict their standards on anyone else. Anyone who doesn't want to follow the rules, and doesn't believe in having only 1 kid, will be banished from the island.

My utopia will have no foriegn policy. Hmm, that is all I can think of right now, maybe I'll think up more....

drugs legal - if someone wants to kill themselves let them (as long as help is always availble for those who want it)

I already have my own utopia sort of... its at home with my loving wife... and when we have had enough of the bull shit the world has to offer, we turn off the phones, dont answer the door, pick out a good movie and snuggle together eating popcorn and enjoying some quiet quality time together... We create our own little island in the storm of whats supposed to be a wonderfull world out there.. Those are the best times and some of you folks should try it some time.. you may even like it.. but you have to get your own wife or girl friend, cause Im not gonna share mine..LOL

   

I have absolutly no idea.
But I will think about it.
