Here is a site which really makes you think. To be honest I'm starting to really believe that this will happen.

Dollarization

I would like to comment on this clip I got from the site.

So what's stopping Canada? Part of the reason may be related to the emotional attachment of the Canadian dollar. Some Canadian nationalists feel that Canada would lose its identity if it were to lose its currency. This is quite perplexing in comparison to much of Europe. With all its distinct cultures, it has somehow managed to overcome nationalism, and come together to create a strong currency, and stronger economy.

Whoever typed this on that site is ignorant and is forgeting a major difference between how Europe merged and how Canada and U.S would merge. What he is forgeting is that all of those European states were already very much alike to begin with.

Canada on the other hand is very different from the U.S. So how he comes up with this, shows his own ignorance.

Kevin

After looking over that site a little more, I noticed the UNA site content has some contradictions. The site while trying to sell the idea of adopting the American dollar, also say's Canada would still keep their independence. Yet if you look at the map above it shows the American flag over the entire land. And the site also calles provinces states. Talk about "arrogant".

Kevin

Why would Canada want to adopt a failing currency?
Whoever typed this on that site is ignorant and is forgeting a major difference between how Europe merged and how Canada and U.S would merge.
They also ignored that the EU created a new currency for this purpose. Italy did not adopt the Franc or the Mark, all countries adopted the new currency.

Canada adopting the greenback would be a daily slap in the face when we get our double-double. If Canada, the US and Mexico adopted a new North American currency, that might be different.

Doc, didn't notice that detail they missed. The whole site is full of errors.

Jesse, here's what I told them on the forum.

Then get rid of the American dollar and the U.S can adopt the Canadian dollar. The Canadian dollar is growing in worth, may as well adopt the dollar that has momentum.

This all just begs the bigger question: Why would we seek ANY further economic integration with a sinking ship?

It would mean saddling ourselves , Canada , which has more resources per capita than most of the world , with a country which has depleted its own resources , and is greedily eyeing it's neighbours . Yanks are asking "How are we going to deal with our resourcers ?" To which the obvious reply is "What do you mean we , white man?"
Regardless of whether we use US or Canadian currency , shareing a common currency would be like buying Canadians tickets on the Titanic, just after she hit the iceberg.
If it were not for speculation , and if currencies were judged by per capita assets, and debt , the US dollar would be worth 12 cents Canadian. Any common currency would drag us down with the sinking ship, with us acting as a far too small life preserver, period. It would be like trying to keep the Titanic afloat with a single , tiny life preserver.
The US debt , per capita is $250,000 per yank, man woman and child.

This has got to be the worst idea I have ever heard, US and Canada are so different in so many ways. Not just the country, the political system, the way of life, but also the people.

Merging Canada with the US is like merging Gays and Lesbians together.

Plus all our Natural Resources, I wonder who would get them .

A North American Union is just one big fucker over for Canada.

Really, and Canada is the crows nest on this ship that is sinking.

ManifestDestiny @ Tue Feb 26, 2008 5:04 pm

and then there is the bigger question, why should we say we are merged when we already are in almost every aspect.

Sadly, you're right.

We'll have to get busy turning that crow's nest into a lifeboat.
