If we we're to spell them the first way we'd get introuble because it's wrong and that it's not proper english.
No offense, but that is bull. Mainly because of the fact that the English people were the first to speak English. This is why I laugh at anyone who says that the way I spell colour, theatre or centre is wrong.
And that is weird how you get in trouble down there. Up here, either is deemed acceptable.
BTW, judging by your post and name, I'm gonna take a gander and say...

It is stupid, but we'd get in trouble for it because that's not how we they taught us to spell it in school. When we we're learning how to spell words spelling them like colour or theatre was the wrong way to do it. The teachers wouldn't necessarly get mad at us, but they'd dock us points on spelling them with the u or switching around the er. I think it's stupid because we know what the word means no matter what way it's spelt.
