Without actually giving your age, ( let everyone guess), what was the first major news story that you recall your 'parents' being so involved with that it seemed that it was all that was talked about by 'the adults' forever!?
For me, it was the death of Pope John XXIII in June of '63, soon to be followed by the assasination of JFK.
And what was the first major news story that you actually followed with real interest?
Not counting 'The Beatles first North American tour, the first story to really captivate me, and still does, is the 'Sharon Tate' murders as well as the moon landing, both in 1969.
lol, I'm not that old
first I remember was the oil crisis of '73.
First I followed was the elections of '79 and '80
I saw the challenger explosion and 911 live but I think the first was Walter Cronkite and the last of the moon landings.
For me it was the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Challenger Explosion, Berlin Wall, Fall of Communism
Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong landing and walking on the moon.
Um..... I remember bits and chunks of news here and there growing up but never really gave a damn about much of it as a child until the 90' Gulf War which was pretty much everywhere on TV.
Suez Crisis and Hungarian Revolution. And Pearson getting the Nobel Peace Prize.
Thanks yogi, I can't remember what I had for supper last night and now you expect me to remember my childhood.
Okay let's go with the death of Senator Ted Kennedy....... Sorry wrong childhood.
Don't ask me why but for some reason I seem to remember my parents watching the riots when they integrated that Little Rock Arkansas high school.
The assassination of John Lennon - 1980 and Clifford Robert Olson - 1980....
I remember that cuz I wasnt allowed to play outside after school...and I got the belt when I went to the park and not straight home one day...then I knew something was bad when all us kids couldnt play until dark.
Something about the Korean war......... before we had a TV.
Berlin wall.
I grew up with the Vietnam War on TV every night. I remember the news guys always talking about the "body count" and I had no real idea what that was until I hit high school.
While I remember the moon landing, it was the Vietnam War that was omnipresent in my childhood. The Draper boys down my street both got drafted and when they came back I ised to like hanging out with them. They were restoring a 1940's MG roadster and I used to go down there and polish or clean whatever they'd hand me. Then one day my father tells me not to hang out with them because they were probably on drugs.
After that I was very aware of the bias against veterans and I am right now not too happy with the Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano saying that the most serious terror threat to the USA right now is from veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

So the progress made for vets in the past 40 years is we're no longer druggies but terrorists. Thanks.
The first story in the media I followed as an adult was the 1980 election. I supported Jimmy Carter just because my parents did and I spouted off all the BS about Ronald Reagan like the trained monkey I was supposed to be. It was when Iran freed the hostages because Reagan said he was going to call a joint session of Congress and declare war if those people were not freed is what helped me down the road to becoming a conservative.
The early Reagan years heavily influenced me so the 1980 election was therefore the most important story of my adulthood.
