‘Take your best shot’ says former Marine in front of War Memorial'

$1:
A former Marine stood guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Friday to pay tribute to Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, a reservist from Hamilton, Ont. who was shot dead while guarding the monument last week.

“That young corporal was a comrade in arms,” said former Marine Major “Fox” Sinke. “That’s how I see it. So I’m paying tribute to him, as best I can. We are not intimidated. Take your best shot.”

Sinke was dressed in his full Material dress uniform as he marched around the National War Memorial.

Bart? Was that you?

Did they check your mag for live rounds?

While I certainly appreciate the sentiment, you know the Canadian Forces are in desperate straits when we need retirees (and American troops at that) to guard our war memorials.

Certainly ugly enough to be a Jarhead.

Some might consider it a nice gesture but something doesn't feel right about it. I can't help but think it's somewhat disrespectful and despite his comrade in arms speech it's almost like he's saying we can't defend ourselves so I'm here and I'll protect you.

This unusual act makes me wonder how the American Military would feel if the next time they had a terrorist attack I went down and took a take a turn at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. My guess is they'd fire my ass out the door faster than I went in.

I hope I'm wrong and I hope Major Sinke is the real deal and he's doing this out of respect but, for some reason, like I said something just doesn't feel right about it, especially since IIRC you had to be "asked" before being allowed to Stand Guard at a Foreign Countries Cenotaph.

I searched to Ottawa Roughriders roster for 1964 and 1965 and don't see a Sinke listed. In the video he claimed to have played for them during those seasons :(

There isn't a Sinke listed anywhere in the CFL all time roster.....if he really is a US Marine he may not be listed.....as a tackling dummy.....

Seems to me a real Marine major would have a better grasp of military protocol on foreign soil.

THat's kinda how I was feeling. The gesture is appreciated, but it's our coutry so leave it to us please.

Just to be sure I checked the Roughriders rosters for that time period and this guy doesn't show up on any of them either. So his football claim is debunked which makes me think more and more that's he's not who he says he is.

I guess Bart will have to confirm the uniform because with that array of medals the good Major's been around, Vietnam for sure. I tried to check the medals and most of them seem plausible and are on the list of Marine Corps Medals so maybe he is an ex Marine Corps Major. Anybody else want to try and match the medals here's a website with the Marine Corps medal list.

BTW he's got four stars on his purple heart but when you search purple heat recipients they have no name matching his. So for a guy who got wounded 5 times you'd think they would at least have the decency to put your name down, at least once. XD

So you'd think ...

I checked that he had the medals in the correct order of precedence. He does.

Regarding foreign protocol. In the video he says he is Canadian born to a Canadian father and American mother so yes the uniform is that of a foreign service but he's doing it as a Canadian.

There were a hell of a lot of Canadians who served in the US forces during the Vietnam war ... something like 20,000, perhaps.
