So I see where Anonymous has shut down 20,000 ISIS twitter accounts. Why does it take Anonymous to do this, why isn't twitter doing this? (Who are what is twitter?) Same with the vids they publish on the net - what sites is running these vids, and if they are legitimate sites, why aren't they taking them down. If not legitimate, why are western govts not doing cyberwarfare here and taking down these sites? There doesn't seem to be any kind of concerted push by the West to counter the ISIS propaganda. Hell, make fake ISIS vids that show them daisy chaining each other, that will stir up the mindless followers.

On a related note, x spurts on CBC were saying that ISIS is run like a corporation, and that thare are obviously sophisticated business/money people behind it. When I hear that I think Saudis - are we once again giving them a pass knowing full well they are supporting these scum bags?

Straight ahead military force may not be the best option here, but is the West exploring all other avenues to fight this infestation?

Looks like they're finally at least starting to talk about it. What, ISIS wasn't deemed enough of a threat before this?

$1:
Combatting the use of social media as a communication, recruiting and fundraising tool in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is a hot topic at this weekend's Halifax International Security Forum.

"If you look at the investments Daesh [ISIS] has made in social media, videography, it would compete frankly with the best of us and we haven't really fully grasped that, nor thought of a strategy that we need to deal with that," said Janice Stein, a professor in the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.

Anonymouse doesn't have to play by the rules.

Governments and corperations do.

andyt @ Sat Nov 21, 2015 7:18 pm

What are the rules, terrorists can spew their stuff as much as they want? Twitter Inc is located in San Francisco. Surely that makes them liable under US laws. I mean they are facilitating terrorism. Maybe it's time to take this fight into the 21st century. People here have asked about shutting down the internet to fight ISIS - surely it's possible to just shut down or severely impair the ISIS part.

Robair @ Sat Nov 21, 2015 9:23 pm

Everything requires due process. It's all of the laws that people get up in arms about repealing when the government wants the ability to look in on what you're doing.

Anonymous isn't constrained by privacy rules. Or any other rules for that matter.

BRAH @ Sat Nov 21, 2015 9:45 pm

The NSA could probably take down everything ISIS related and the minute they started groups like the ACLU would cry foul where as pointed out Anonymous has more freedom.

I can not believe the West is totally helpless here to fight ISIS on this level. I think they just haven't thought of it. At the very least, use counter propaganda. But companies can't just carry any bullshit on their sites, there are legal limits. Go after those. And use economic pressure to shut these sites down. And, if the Chinese etc can do cyber attacks on the US, I'm sure the US is already playing that game as well - do it to ISIS.

Maybe they leave them alone on purpose for information gathering purposes. Knowing who's who. I remember the story of the fool who got bombed by giving away his location on twitter.

Could be to see what the fools are talking about among themselves. Kinda like my reason to still visit this site. To see what the frothers are thinking and talking about within themselves.

Desert Dude is correct. I recall one high ranking ISIS was targeted when he stepped out to log onto twitter. Personally I think Anonymous should stop interfering with this shit. I'm sure if the US wanted to shut down Twitter and other social networks they have the capability so there is probably a reason they haven't done so.

See my quote above from the security conference. Maybe it's not about shutting them down so much a using counter propaganda.
