Note: Since I have gotten notice that for some reason, people couldn't reply to it where it was originally posted, I moved it here, to hopefully nullify the problem.

-----------

Why do people always seem to jump to the conclusion once they learn someone is on assistance that they are lazy and not wanting to do anything, rather than in a bad situation or has a disability?

I myself am on ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) which is an Ontario Social Assistance program for those with disabilities (I have Autism). Just graduated college and now pondering my next move, wanting to get a start in the flooring industry, probably as an assistant/labourer.

I have an older brother who is a recovering addict, and I have heard from him that a lot of the druggies he knows scam the system and work for money under the table, and also deal drugs obviously. The abusers and/or fraudsters need to be dealt with because they paint a bad light on those who have a legitimate claim and do what they are meant to do with their funds, pay rent, food, and other basic things. As far as addicts go, mandatory rehab would be better as opposed to money because they cant think straight while on drugs.

But to the point, I really don't understand why people immediately judge without talking to the person first.

People judge others and wield the big paintbrush based on a lot of things. Ethnicity, occupation, body type, yada yada. Everyone who is this is therefore that. It's just the way people are.

In your specific example it is an unfortunate truth that there are many out there who scam the system and do not have a legitimate reason not to be working. Obviously you are not one of those people. I've known a few people who have been/are on some form of disability benefits legitimately and for reasons that they cannot change or control.

So, others judge you for it without knowing the facts. That's their problem, not yours. As long as you and the people that matter in your life know the truth, who cares about the rest of them?

I wouldn't worry about it unless the person judging you is an actual Judge. If they are then you could be in trouble. :D

Here's your answer:

There are enough people abusing the system that anyone using the system is then suspect.

Sort of like how people complain that not all cops are bad, but there's enough bad ones to make all the rest suspect.

Same dynamic at play here.

Question:

Does the NDP thing show up beside my profile picture? Because, I cannot see it.

Now you gotta save him from himself. he keeps starting topics in threads that are 'closed' such as NDP.

I don't think I'm a spammer, the last time I posted was last night and it was the same post which I deleted. Time before that was last weekend.

Now I understand why there wasn't much discussion. Thanks for explaining things, Yogi.
