A Conservative minority won't be able to change much, unless... they team up with the Liberals. Both are right wing parties, they have a lot in common. It is also my greatest fear.
I don't believe the "Liberal" party is all that right wing. Being the party that gave gay's their rights, was open to decriminalization of marijuana and abortion rights. I wouldn't consider them right in that respect.

Kevin

I've got news, THAT Canada hasn't existed since 1995 thanks to the liberals. That you have only three social issues says it all, and we know that the gay marriage thing wasn't clear cut (they were opposed to it for the majority of their mandate, and some liberals voted against it-and it COULD have just been called a union since they arleady had common law rights). Plus, they had a majority government and pot ain't legal. As for abortion, I don't think I've ever heard the conservative party even mention it. What's more to fear is mentioned above-the liberal-conservative party which votes together on three quarters of legislation.

Let's not forget that they cut an awful lot of social programs, reduced health care spending, want close integration with the US and are great fans of globalism. That's not very leftist.

As I see policy today with regard to both Liberals and Conservatives has more to do with in differences how to empower capital and dis-empower the majority.

The Liberals believed in direct intervention into the economy to ensure that the economic establishment accumulates more and more of the national wealth. Hence the Liberals accept a more interventionist government.

The Conservatives have adopted the old laissez-faire liberalism that entitles those who control capital the power (freedom) to control society in their own self interest. The Conservatives want to limit government to protecting what they see as the "natural" order of economic ranking. This is why they believe government should never interfere in that order by assisting those who are disadvantaged more than those who are already advantaged through accumulated wealth and privilege.

Both Liberalism and Conservatism today are focused on the economic elite. Both adopt vote buying strategies such as the two "child care" prolicies or the GST cut/tax cuts but the bulk of the measures both propose are focused on creating higher and higher levels of economic inequality.
The Conservatives have adopted the old laissez-faire liberalism that entitles those who control capital the power (freedom) to control society in their own self interest. The Conservatives want to limit government to protecting what they see as the "natural" order of economic ranking.
In the good ol' days of the Cold War many people firmly believed that the days of capitalism were numbered and communism would naturally win at the end. It didn't. Now the other side believes fanatically in its own madness and they won't change their mind until their World collapses.

Corporations are taking over our countries and imposing their own rule on us. They rule by the "useful idiots". This system will naturally collapse, within a few decades. Being "non-interventionist" is a term invented to justify the rule of corporations. It's a new word for "anarchy". Yet, countries that give up control always collapse. Today, an "interventionist" country (China) has the highest economic growth in the World. The symbol of "non-interventionist" mentality (US) is on the verge of economic collapse. Food for thought...
