It's because you hold that atypical Eastern attitude of us that causes your confusion.
My father was a westerner and almost my entire family resides there. I have spent a fair bit of my life in and out of the West and your a lot of compatriots do make a show of stuff like that. I remember an old neighbour of my parents in the Shuswap proudly telling me how tough his fore bearers were ... (me, obviously an Eastern greenhorn) arriving in Alberta ALL THE WAY BACK IN THE TWENTIES!!! Imagine that. They had to putt-putt over the prairie stubble in a tin lizzie. I then told my family story that they arrived as starving refugees in ox carts, banished from the newly formed United States FOR THEIR RELIGEOUS BELIEFS and forced to clear the virgin forest for farming, for the second time in three generations. He responded the he'd never heard of such a thing. It didn't fall into his tougher-than-tough Alberta boy narrative.

Wonderful. So, all your family are Rednecks? My mother's family is from Montreal.
What does any of that have to do with who we are now? It's 2013 after all.

Mostly that's true but there is still that lingering, prairie populist "Bible Bill Eberhart" thing going on. Just look at some of the Federal cabinet ministers. Harper keeps them on a short leash but every once in a while ...

The orbit around the cabinet is loaded with born-agains from the West. It's a legacy of the Reform Party movement

Which ones?
Bernard Valcourt (NB)
Rob Nicholson (ON)
Peter MacKay (NS)
Rona Ambrose (Oh there is one, finally!)
Diane Finley (ON)
. . . .
As for the religious part- I don't think I've ever heard one single comment by a member on the subject of religion.
Care to try again?

Yup, and they are busy writing God into every piece of legislation.
Is this more 'secret agenda' stuff we are all supposed to be afraid of ?

Commercial vehicle inspections wrap up in Edmonton
Over the three-day crackdown, 275 total commercial vehicles were inspected, 46 per cent of which were taken out of service, 24 per cent required attention and 30 per cent passed inspection, according to statistics released by Edmonton Police Services Friday morning. In total, 845 violations were found.
EPS partnered with agencies from across the province to hold commercial vehicle inspections in Edmonton between Tuesday and Thursday this week. Twenty to 30 inspectors were on site each day to ensure the vehicles were safe and road-worthy
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/edm ... story.html30% PASSED! Holy shit! 845 violations on 275 vehicles!! And I share the road with these jalopies?

I bet it is way worse then that!
We are just as short handed on mechanics as any other trade. And, some of the ones that are currently working in this city shouldn't be.
I just had a Hino come out of factory service, and it got 3 infractions (steering, brakes, suspension) on the way back to our offices.
You think I'm going to pay the fines? Fuck that. The ass wipe that gave it a clean bill of health, less then 30 minutes prior, will be getting that bill. And that ass wipe works for Hino!
That is not to say that there isn't many, many companies that employ the "run em till their dead" mentality...
Btw, any chance you found out how they get away with the intersection cameras?

That's just nuts! A company I used to work for had their Safety Manager quit, so I got the task of managing the fleet inspections. Alberta code was that every vehicle had to have a 'walk around' done every morning before drivers took off, and the inspections recorded and booklets returned for record keeping. Same with driver logs.
Number of books returned in 2 years: zero. Number of complaints to management: 1 per month. Number of shits the management gave: zero.
They maintained the fleet mechanically, they just couldn't prove they did.

God, I sympathize!
We had the same problem, so we got an option installed with our fleetmatics...they have to check the boxes before they can start the vehicle....
It keeps my logs for me, and I can access any vehicle's log at any time...awesome when the OH&S auditors come knocking.

I'll give Christy Clark a nod of approval today. She immediately rejected a recommendation from the UBCM to bring back photo radar "in school zones".
Yeah we heard that before, and I never ever saw one in a school zone. Every single one I saw was on a particular 10 mile stretch of absolutely straight 2 lane highway between Vanderhoof and Prince George. So every single car that passed anyone at the only chance they could got a ticket.
And ICBC was paying the cop's overtime so they could go out and generate as much revenue as quickly as they possibly could without lifting a finger or doing dick shit for "safety".
Since those days they've raised the speed limit thereand it's so clear you can spot a cop on the sie of the road for miles. Traffic flows smooth as shit through a goose, no one's all wound up because they can't pass and there have been fewer accidents.

Vic might have a Mennonite name but Mr. Adultery and disown your own kids for your bastard child is only Christian for votes. And the dummies in the Bible belt fall for it.

Safety inspections get various fail rates during a blitz. The catch 22 is the reported numbers are skewed. Highway tractors undergo frequent inspections at the scales and yes many are out of service for infractions like brakes or even burnt out lights. The safety blitz concentrates on urban centres as well as highways. The stats at the border crossings are way better. In the urban environment you have a lot of commercial vehicles that never leave the city and never cross a scale. Think landscapers and delivery trucks. These are businesses that use trucks in the business but not as the business. The daily safety inspection referred to by others does not exist. Neither do they have log books that are reviewed constantly for infractions. Another anomaly of the blitz is they do not check every vehicle. They target the ones that look like a problem. I know some highway fleets that have to 'request' and inspection at the scales because their inspection rate is not high enough for the regulations. Good fleets gain a reputation and the inspectors wave them by.
If urban fleets were subject to more rigorous official inspections instead of the once or twice a year that may look at 1% of the commercial vehicles on the road then the stats would improve and we would all be safer.

Not yet, I see my friend Saturdays at the Legion.

I spoke with him, and he said the law changed in 2009 allowing unmanned traffic cameras that give tickets for speed on green along with red light violations, but they must record video, not just photos, and the video must be reviewed by a person.
