Most folks here seem fairly annoyed by the repeated necroing of old threads. To stop it from happening again I'd suggest two options:
1) Place an automatic lock on threads that takes effect (for example) seven/fourteen days after the last post has been added.
2) Purge/delete threads altogether six/eight/ten/twelve months after the last post has been added. Except for someone who's being extremely anal about things and trying to look up ancient posts to beat someone up with, a huge archive doesn't seem to be too useful to anyone. I don't much about the techy side of things, but surely having a much smaller archive section would help out with site maintainance and speed up things for posters with slower-speed computers.
3) Apply these locks/deletes only for the news/politics sections. That way the untouched general/entertainment/jabber threads (e.g. FuckList, weird YouTube postings, last-word games, etc.) that have lots of posts in them can be easily resurrected by anyone interested in keeping them going.
Nothing personal against anyone here, just making a couple of recommendations that might help out.
Jayson? Gimme a beer, Jayson!
how a bout a kick in the crotch with a frozen boot for repeat offenders?
Make 'em eat dirt!
Or make 'em watch the Hoff!
You're on the right track Thanos. I might suggest 'lock after 30 days' because some news stories, ie; criminal trials can take that long to get to court, such as the thread about Terry Stauffer who was murdered in Edson last fall. or if more relevant info became available after a thread was 'put on the shelf' the person wanting to make the post coud notify a mod.
I think I'll add this thread to my favorites.
Just so I can come back and post in it about four months after the last guy.
Good idea Thanos..
Restrict Noobs(Age and Post Count) posting permissions. Say no threads X Days since Last Post. Probably require Programming and likely not practical, but would be an Ideal capability, IMO.
I'd wipe their Post Count to zero, send a PM, and suspend their Account until responding to the PM.
I dunno, is it really that big of an issue? Often there are legit reasons to post in a thread months old. Deleting is not an option, since I want to have the Search engine footprint and record, along with post count.
None of the suggestions unfortunately are available with out mods (if they exist) or custom coding on my part.
dunno about others, but i use recent topics scroll as my usual page for CKA.
I think we are looking for ways of slowing down illegitimate posts
from ex members who are famous for jumping in, making 15-20 necro posts,
and then running away before a mod can show up.
makes the recent topics scroll a bit messy, and some members
dont see the necro, and start commenting on something out of date.
If you hang around, you can actually watch members post,
realizing the necro, and then deleting their posts not to look foolish.
All because of one ex member who loves to necro like mad.
Think about it that way
I think sometimes they're funny and quite an art. In this case a noob jumped on the site and let fly with pages of it. Maybe it's something we can control for the cases like that.
I find this issue funny, because if a 'noob' comes in and posts something that's already been posted a while ago, he's attacked for not checking to see if there was already a thread on the topic. If he finds an existing thread and posts in that, he's blamed for 'necro'ing.
Obviously the guy in the past few days was just adding unimportant comments to old threads, so I can see why people would be annoyed, but I don't think that warrants locking up or deleting old threads.
Why not just put an note in the INTRODUCTIONS section for new users? Give the newbies a few guidelines. Then it won't take them a month to learn all the unwritten rules or scare them away.
