I still think the worst is not people submitting themselves to horrible... I guess food. I think its TLC and their exploitation shows.

Agreed 100%! Toddlers and Tiaras comes to mind.

Everyone associated with that show should be jailed for child abuse.
Yep. The long wool sock and a few bars of soap com to mind as well. What they put those kids through.. along with dressing 3 year olds like whores.
Unbelieveable.
Then there are the shows on ghosts: Ghost hunters, Medium and the worst of the worst Psychic Kids. That people would feed an child with the utter shit that their imaginary friends are real, they can see ghosts and that there are things in the dark just to make a quick buck. It fucking makes me sick!

The link I posted is only one example of what is passing for 'entertainment' these days.
Does this really 'speak to the maturity' of society in general? Seems that producers are manufacturing shows out of damn near anything, labelling it 'reality tv', and flogging it. Or all we see now are animations, both on tv & theatre. Zombies & vampire schlock. The sad part is that peeps are buying into it.
Really. When was the last time a network or a studio launched a worthwhile show or movie? Where the hell are the Western genre series? Cop shows. Nyet!
I must be getting 'old' too!
You are quite right in that this example is but one of many that could be posted as reference to how low the bar is currently for many viewers as to what counts for "entertainment". Even just hearing about this gagged me. What some people won't do to win some money and get their face on television.
I was talking about how programming is catering more and more to this end of the spectrum with a good friend earlier this morning. She had remarked on seeing the advert for TLC's stellar program about strange addictions. Some guy humping his car, people eating polish, etc. It is pitiful how willing people are now to humiliate themselves in some weak attempt at their small slice of fame or for a buck.
There will just continue to be more and more of these shows as they are cheap for the networks to put together and they will get more disgusting as they each try to grab the viewers with the most shocking stunt.

What makes it worse is that people will gladly watch them.

You're right on with that, Gunny. Thae shit that is foisted upon us leaves little choice. I have a couple hundred channels to choose from, ( all these just to get 4-5 channels that actually are worth watching), and most times flip thru, and then lament " fuck-all to watch"!
If the tv is on usually tuned to Investigation Discovery or 48 hrs-History-Sometimes MSNBC for American Greed etc. or one of two local channels for the news.
And let's not give the commercials a pass on this either. FFS! Don't these advertisers understand that they are just wasting their $$$ because folks hit the mute (ignore) button?

Disagree. The public has lots of choice on whether this shit gets produced and then foisted upon us. Some show that has hot chicks guzzling donkey spunk with big ratings means the people are into watching that kind of drek. Have its ratings plummet and the people have spoken.
Fear factor and shows of that nature do well because the public wants to see them, not because they are being forced upon us.

Don't forget you 2 that for the most part, TV = privately owned companies who answer to share holders. Because of this, they try to produce the cheapest shows money will buy that will still get watched and ultimately, sell advertisement time. Reality TV shows are, for the most part, cheap to make.

Appropos to this topic.
For those peeps here 'old enough' to remember these times, enjoy.
For those 'not old enough' ( sucks to be you!
) you might enjoy it anyways. At least you'll have a good laugh!

To be honest, other than the "dietary challenge" nothing on fear factor should cause any fear. The safety devices used ensure that there is little to fear. It's not as if someone will die from any of their stunts.
Remove all the safety equipment and watch the ratings skyrocket as people tune in to watch darwinism live!

Totally agree. The show should be called Gross Factor.

I agree with the both of you.
