Well I leave tomorrow to head back to Manitoba, but I love my trips to Vancouver.

Some frightening things though:

Guess what the most spoken language in B.C. is?

English? Nope.

Mandarin or Cantonese? Nope

KOREAN!!!

Don't take me as prejudice but I get a little creeped out when English is no longer the #1 spoken language....

Other observations.

The traffic here is awful.

Its all completely mixed up, the Lion's Gate Bridge is God Awful.

Honestly...they need a new bridge..3 lanes is NOT enough.

I like the fact the Sea-Sky is turning into a double-laner...Shannon Falls was beautiful yesterday...

Oh, and this garbage strike..CUPE Local 15, needs a kick in the rear end.

They already get payed 10% more then the private sector with benefits to boot.

Although I believe if people are paying the City of Vancouver taxes for services which they are not receiving they should get rebates back...

I don't think I care for the Sam Wheel-Chair guy though.

Moving on, Coal Harbour is beautiful..and I saw this AMAZING yaht and saw the hellicopter land on it!

I have a feeling Jimmy Pattison owns it...he sure owns everything else here (save-on foods and every bliddy car dealership)

I liked the PNE, although I didn't really care for the Prize Home this time around, Super Dogs were good as usual.

Stanley Park is like I remember it.

Then their is Hastings and your homeless problem....

I say round them up and throw them on an island for Survivor: Homeless edition.

Oh, and Surrey is awful as usual...ick.

And I was going to drive up the Sunshine Coast but your ferry fees are absolutely ridiculous!!

Anywho...

I beg to disagree: the ferry fees are quite reasonable compared to what you pay in Washington State to travel on fifty and sixty year old ferries that Canada would've retired ages ago.

And the Sea to Sky is probably going to four lanes to handle the traffic for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

westmanguy @ Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:52 pm

4 lanes each side?

Driving up to Squamish the other day...their are areas where getting a double-laner looks like a hard task...

westmanguy @ Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:53 pm

oh and another stupid STUPID thing:

Sky Trains...you pay the fees and their is no turn-style card reader!

Does the city actually think people will be honest and pay?

sheesh.

Well they do random checks then you get a fine if you are without your fare. I paid my fare and most people do.

westmanguy @ Fri Aug 31, 2007 3:58 pm

Clogeroo - I know their is random checks, but every major transportation system in the world has the card reader turn style checkers.

lily - I guess your right, but a trip up the Sunshine Coast or to Vancouver Island is not cheap...

and I don't know Sam's last name.

lily lily:
Most of the ferry runs around here are like mini-cruises so they're worth every penny.

You are straight up right! I usually skip flying into Victoria so I can take the ferry from Tsawassen to Swartz Bay and go sit in the Pacific Buffet for the two hour ride. That is probably the best and most unspoken pleasure cruise in all the world. When I was up there this past spring there was a pod of killer whales right at Tsawassen and I'm sitting there with the Mrs. enjoying a wonderful breakfast, sipping an excellent cup of coffee, and whale watching in utmost comfort.

I love those ferries! :D

Sullivan. You could have called him the mayor.

It wastes time for most people so they do checks instead. People who take the sky train also board other buses so would need valid fare anyway. Some buses just let people come in all doors though because they are quite busy. They do check and many times I have been on the train people board and ask for your fare or sometimes they stand where you walk up or down to a station and ask for it.

Most cities have annoying quirks to them so I guess it's a matter of finding one with quirks you can live with. I, for one can't wait to move there to the lower B.C. mainland, maybe Vancouver and maybe even Victoria. I've visited there many times but haven't been back there since the late 1990's. Any advice someone who's going to move in to that area? Victoria over Vancouver? North Van or the surrounding cities?

Victoria if you can. Stay away from Vancouver. :)

I vote for Victoria, nicest City I've ever had the pleasure to live in. I also agree with Lily the ferry system in BC is the best I've ever used.

Now travel from Nova Scotia to Argentia on the Cattle Ferry and that will show you how not to treat people. My god I've never paid so much money to survive in such squalid conditions. People slept in the stairways and in the halls and in the dog kennels (that was me it was the cleanest spot on the boat). God what a nasty experience.

Hyack @ Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:00 pm

Victoria....just for it's easy access to the Pacific and GREAT scenery, not taking anything away from Vancouver's great views. If you want to live on the Lower Mainland I would advise New Westminster, although it's basically a suburb of Vancouver it is in most ways still a small town.

Thanks guys!
