What is the definition of an "American"

One who lives in the Americas. Yes, believe it or not anyone living in North or South America is technically an American. The Unitedstatesians have taken up the moniker for themselves. I demand it be returned!

I've always wondered about that. There needs to be something original- although I guess it is fine since we have it in the actual name of our country.
It seems people are either afraid to post for fear of offending or they just plain don't know. Why offending? They're certainly not afraid of their comments being accepted.

I think it's just late.

Or that too.
Depends on which state you live in, lol. Southern Americans seem to be different than Northern Americans. Northerners are my favorite by the way, they make better pets.
lol J/K. Seriously though, you guys wanted some posts here to boost this thread so Dennis to the rescue.
It's come to mean simply a legal citizen of the U.S.A.
1. Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture.
2. Of or relating to North or South America, the West Indies, or the Western Hemisphere.
3. Of or relating to any of the Native American peoples.
4. Indigenous to North or South America. Used of plants and animals.

this is a tough question....there are so many who are not born in America yet they live and work here and call it their home....is a clear definition even possible?
So, I guess an American is someone who
a) is born on American soil (to American citizen?)
b) immigrated to America and took citizenship
that's assuming you mean the USA of course.

Some may be born to American citizens and are still living abroad that consider themselves American. Does being born to American citizens abroad automatically make you an American citizen?
yes, i think so....maybe it makes them eligible for dual citizenship. my mom is german and my dad american....my sister was born in the US but she has dual citizenship (i think you have to apply for it though because i don't have it).

I was told that if I applied for dual citizenship, I may not be let back in the country(US) ..I think the laws have changed since then...my dad was US military and my mum a Brit...I was born in the UK. In the UK, I have automatic citizenship and in the US I am also a citzen based on my fathers military status at the time..I have one sister whom also falls under this situation..the rest of my brothers and sisters were all born in the States...and we are all US citizens. I consider myself a US American always have and always will, despite it's shortcomings I call it home. btw my brother married German girl ten years ago...I won't tell you what she thought of US Americans when she first arrived and I won't tell you how much fun it was egging her on..unfortunately some of what she said was spot on.
