I was wondering if there is any free service or website for looking up ones credit profile or credit score?

I see transunion.ca advertised on TV, but it costs $14.95 + $7.95.

If there is n free option, what is the best paid search?

If you make a request through regular mail it's free. It only costs you if you do it online. I'll look the form up for you.

Equifax is another well recognized source for credit reports.

there are no online free credit reports. I have been looking for years, its only free if you do it by mail

that doens't make sens to me, online there are no paper, printing or postage costs, yet its free and online costs money.

I'm in no hurry so i guess i will do the mail option. Are there others or is this the only mail one?

I also heard something about if you check your credit too many times its bad?

Oh, as far as the paid services go I kind of perfer Equifax's services better but there really is no differnce. You'll get a over all score plus a listing of your credit history complete with late payments and so forth. Personally I'm signed up with Equifax's credit watch, I get a report every three months. I think I'm also entitld to go online and check my rating when ever I want but I've never actually bothered to do so.

That is true, every time you make an enquiry into your credit it records it. Lenders see this but I don't think they know who it's form just that there have been enqueries.

you are aloud 6 credit hits a year before it will affect it. You can check your credit report yourself 50 times a year if you want, it only hits when an outside institution asks, like a bank, car loan etc...

Equifax and Transunion both do the mail option

Checking your credit yourself isn't bad, but others checking it for the purpose of giving you credit is. So if you run out and apply for 20 credit cards it will have an impact on your score. Changing banks and moving often also has a negative impact on it.

I think it's some kind of law that it has to be free for you to check your own credit rating, some kind of consumer protection thing so the only way the credit agencies can make money is to charge for the convience of viewing it on line. That's why it's free if you mail in the form as opposed to going online.

damn i move a lot.

The mail form asks for my SIN but says its optional, should I be worried about adding my SIN number to this form.

No but what i would do is pay the 7.95 and get it instantly , I have done the mail option and it took 4 times sending it in to get it. Did it online in about 30 seconds

It's up to you, if you do don't use a transparent envelope and make you seal it well and have the proper address.

If your trying to work on your credit rating, as in improving it, there are a lot of great things you can do in conjuction with your bank. They will help you out if you approch them.

I'm mostly just curious at this point. I might be looking to buy an apartment next year. My brother is trying to get a mortage right now for a house he's building and his credit report didn't have any of his credit card history, something was wrong. So I just want to make sure my various credits have been recorded.
