We seem to have a large contingent of current and former members of the militray on here and i have seen that there is a Soldier Medal, and i have always had the highest respect for the members of the land forces, but i would like to see a Sailor Medal for the current and former members of the navy

It wouldnt have to be anything grand the same graphic could be used from the Soldier medal but perhaps in the Navy colours of "Navy" blue

thanks for consideration in advance

Great idea. Would there be much call for Merchant Marine? Just wondering.

Thousands of people served in the MM during world War 2, they took the same risks as the convoy escorts who protected them, if such a request was made then i would support it

Then I request it on behalf of the merchant Mariners who were such an essential part of our Naval strength. Perhaps a letter M super-imposed onto the sailor medal could distinguish it.

By all means i would support such a medal - it is only fitting that they be honoured and if any such former members are here i offer them my thanks not only from me but from my Uncle who served in the RCN during the entire war

Pardon my ignorance here, but is "merchant marine" only so considered in times of war when commercial ships are calling into service or are commercial mariners "merchant mariners" by definition?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_marine

In Canada, it refers (usually under the heading Merchant Navy) to sailors who served aboard freight vessels in WWII and the Korean War. It is not an official organization. Veterans of these wars were denied veterans benefits that other members of Canada's armed services received after demobilization. They received belated compensation from the government in 1990.

It was a crime tht the government did not recognize the people who served in the merchant marine and it took them decades to acknowlodge thier contribution

Sailor is included in the soldier medal, as is Pilots and such. We had discussed this before and it seemed that keeping it as soldier was a better idea.

I can understand if there is a techincal problem, but to be fair and of course this is only an opnion. The are vast differences between the Air force the Army and the Navy. One of the most devastating events in Canadian militray history was the 'amalgamation' of the forces by Paul helyer and everyone in the militray wore the uniform the army wore, was referred to by army ranks- it destroyed morale.

I cant speak as to what discussion went before, but i think its entirely honourable and appropriate to call sailors - sailors and air force people air force people. It would honour thier unique contributions in the Navy and air Force for what they were, not as soliders

well, i do agree that soldier is kinda biased sounding towards land forces, but i think making another medal for sailors (you would then have to make one for air too) is kinda dumb. the cadet medal is for all three elements so why not make a tri-service looking pic for the soldier medal and call it "armed forces", and just replace the soldier medal with a single one for all three elements....

Well Mr canada kindly whiped one up in less than an hour, the same could be done with an air force medal. I think its only fair to the past and presnt members of those respective elements of the Canadian Forces who served in the Navy and air force to be given the distinction that they deserve.

As for a Tri-service medal, i wouldnt want to take wawy the unique contribtuions that soldiers have made and are being made to this day by lumping them in with the Navy and Air Force, and to ask the question how many soldiers would think its fair to be left with the only medal availible for those present and former members if there were only a 'sailor" or "air force" medal
