I would also suggest the Battle of Falaise Pocket. During the battle Canadian tropps participated in one of the larger operations of the Western Front.

There's also the Battle of the Bulge, the last major offensive the German undertook in WW2.

Excellent ideas.

I'm personally fascinated by the Battle of the Bulge because the Allies had almost fatally underestimated the Germans and then the Germans failed to exploit the many opportunities that had opened up to them in this campaign.

If ever there was proof of the Hand of Divine Providence involved in a war this was it.

For almost inexplicable reasons the Allies screwed up in so many ways that would've handed victory to the Germans.

And then for each Allied screw up there was also an inexplicable and precisely corresponding German screw up in the failure of the Germans to exploit the Allied screw ups.

To quote Gen. Patton at the conference on the battle, "Gentlemen, we can still lose this war."

Yank in NY has some good ideas as well. Especially about the Pacific Theater.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the largest naval batles ever.

Battle of Midway, an aeasy one, but oh so important. Important becuase a space of about 5 minutes decided the fate of the war.

Then there are the various amphibious battles. Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, all very fascinating.

It's too bad the Battle of Bastogne is taken, there's a lot of good quotesd to be had from that battle. Especially this one:

"Well, they've got us surrounded again. The poor bastards"'
-Col. Abrams

I suggest doing the battle Regina is refering to, cause im a Regina Rifle...so im bias :P, but I think Kapyong would also be a good choice because people don't really know alot about the Korean war, its something different that everyone should know about....We can't forget about the Korean War. But anyway...sounds like a fun project. Hope you enjoy doing it, whichever battle you choose. Keep it Canadian though!

I went with Ortona. I found A LOT of info on it. I have a couple videos that I can use for it. It is referred to as "Little Stalingrad" which is my Teacher's favourite battle. I found like a 300 page book on just this battle too. It has 3 different units in the battle, it shows Canada's amazing resiliance and productivity. Thanks for the input everyone. It is much appreciated.

Mustang - All I need to do is find a battle of sort in the century that was significant in some way. Then explain it  I can't do the same battle as anyone else in the class either. Dieppe, and Vimy are taken. I am trying to stay away from the battles everyone knows, so that other people can do them and not have as hard a time.

Okay…what about Midway or Stalingrad? Or perhaps the Somme? I’m trying to suggest historically significant battles that are realistically researchable.

The somme and Stalingrad I could not do, and I really have no idea what midway is.

For some basic background information -

Battle of Midway

If you have John Keegan's book The Second World War, it's chapter 14

(Unless Mustang1 is talking about another Midway, but I'm pretty sure it's that one 8O )

I would recommend the Boer War 1899-1902 the first time Canadian soldiers were sent overseas.

Or the Battle of Hong Kong where Canadians first fought and died in WWII.

All are good choices and at some point in life, should be studied anyway. You should have mentioned if it needed to be Canadian or not.....which it should be if that's where you're going to school.

Midway was a combination of intelligence information, determination, skill, bad judgement and most of all luck. Looking for a project from the Pacific Theatre, I'd have taken Guadalcanal. It has everything, Army, Navy and Air Force. Slugging it out in the jungle to battleships fighting at night in a phone booth.

This wasn't a regular history course, so it could be any battle at all from 1900 - 2000. Regardless of who was part of it.

You had an uncle at Ortona? Shit, good for him!

I haven't looked at that book much yet, is it a good one?
