In the fictional Star Trek universe, World War III is a nuclear war that devastated much of Earth which took place during the mid-21st century. In the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "In a Mirror, Darkly", a computer readout screen gives the starting year of the war as 2026.

World War Three started when Jimmy Carter did nothing in response to the Iranian seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran. His lack of action and resolve emboldened the muslims in the belief that they could conquer the West.
I do believe that this fiasco will eventually lead to Carter taking his place in history next to such luminaries as Neville Chamberlain & Marshal Petain.

World War Three will be World War One all over again.
World War One was caused-among many other reasons- by a lack of communication. World War Three will likely break out over that same cause. The reason for it, however, will be for precious resources, such as oil and water. Everyone will turn against eachother in a struggle to control the precious resources. Man will revert to his paranoid and discriminatory ways. Muslims will be seen as a great enemy of the state, resulting in violent outbursts. Millions will die and the Free World will fall into a state of paranoia, fear, and controlling governments. It will be the Dark Ages all over again......
