Alright...is that link the actual tribe or a faction/splinter group? Because I have something here that is from the Squamish nation itself...or so claimed.

A link to a condemnation of a previous church raid

$1:
The Squamish Nation disassociates itself with Mr. Johnston's actions and
wishes to clarify that his actions were in no way representative of the
Nation. Further, Kevin Annett, who purported to speak on behalf of the
Squamish Nation, is not a member of the Nation and has no association with the
Nation whatsoever.

This is from the elected Band Council. Chief Kiapilano is a traditional Chief.

This struggle is becoming apparent all across Canada, as Canada's elected Band Councillors and Chiefs oppose the resurgence of the traditional leadership which they see as a threat to their own power.

Here's your answer for that.

$1:
Gerald Johnston's claim to be a hereditary chief is not accepted by
the majority of the Squamish Nation community;
- Gerald Johnston has never been a member of the Squamish Nation
Council, the elected governing body of the Nation;
- Gerald Johnston last ran for a position on the Squamish Nation
Council in December 2005. He placed 64th of 68 candidates, receiving
only 55 votes from a total of 2,243 eligible voters; and
- In January 2008, the British Columbia Supreme Court held that Gerald
Johnston had neither the authority nor the capacity to act on behalf
of the Squamish Nation (Te Kapilanoq v. British Columbia 2008
BCSC 54)

That is just an example of the elected council trying to repress the traditional leaders. Means nothing to me. The government of Canada lines their pockets to facilitate such cases, in order to preserve its own power too.

Holy fuck man, I just proved to you this bastard is a fringe asshole who's making his entire tribe look bad, and you ignore the fact that this guy isn't even considered a traditional leader by most of his damn fucking people. With that, he has no POWER to represent his own damn people, and in a freaking election he got only 55 damn votes.

What's the matter with you?

I am waiting to see how it all plays out. It is up to the people to decide who their leaders are, not me or you or the courts or the Band Council. They have the legal right of self-determination.

What you are seeing is a challenge in progress. I am waiting to see how it all plays out.

THEY DID DECIDE!

Look, here. In Canada we have elections. And in elections, we vote for leaders. He lost...badly. He isn't a leader at all. They decided when they voted. He isn't their leader.

One of the things that puzzles me about these land claims etc. is that in Ontario the Limitiations Act currently requires a claim to be file within 2 years of the cause of action. This was ammended from 6 years.

British Common Law involved squatter's rights after 7 years. That is "peaceful possession" for 7 years.

It would seem the FN are centuries late.....

three three:

Many traditional people don't vote in Band Council elections.

And? So they don't like voting, they lose representation. Basic fact of life in anything. If a majority of the tribe was traditional, they would have voted him in, but it seems that more than two thousand voters, 55 voted for him. He fails as a leader of the tribe.

$1:
Across Canada, only about 5% of the eligible population votes in Band Council elections.

And less than 50% of Canadians vote for their MP, those who don't vote shouldn't bitch when they are represented

$1:
This is the issue. Canada claims its Band Councils are the only authority, but they represent very few Indigenous people.

Fact of democracy. The people you want don't always win. Life goes on.

Everything else you said about stealing land and belts and government blah blah blah is besides the point of that he's not the leader of the tribe and does not represent even a large minority of it.
