I would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on our efforts to get movement on climate change from the Harper Conservative government.
We all know that the clock is ticking on the need to take action on the environment. Yet, despite pleas from everyday Canadians and environment groups, Stephen Harper refuses to act.
On May 29, Parliament voted 155-121 to pass an NDP motion directing the Prime Minister to bring C-30 forward for debate and a final vote. Last fall, the NDP sent the Conservatives’ inadequate Clean Air Act to a special committee, where opposition parties worked for months to re-write it. Rewritten and renamed, the Clean Air and Climate Change Act (Bill C-30) is a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately and put Canada on track to honour our Kyoto commitments.
Every day Stephen Harper delays is a wasted opportunity to slow the momentum of catastrophic climate change.
You can help. Contact Stephen Harper and remind him that by showing contempt for this minority Parliament he is also showing total disrespect for the very principles he claims to have meaning for him. (

I reminded the Prime Minister that as Opposition Leader he once challenged former Prime Minister Martin to accept a motion adopted in Parliament and said, “The Prime Minister has the moral responsibility to respect the will of the House”. (Hansard, April 13, 2005) Now, Prime Minister Harper should pay attention to his own words and bring this historic bill back to the House of Commons for a vote.
Looking forward, whether it's on climate change, child care, prescription drugs, takeovers by foreign companies, or the war in Afghanistan the federal NDP is working on the issues that everyday Canadians care about. You can find out more about our work at

Again, I appreciate your interest in protecting our environment. I encourage you to pass along this email to anyone who may be interested. All the best.
Sincerely,
Jack Layton, MP (Toronto-Danforth)
Leader, Canada's New Democrats
