Cutting 100 000 jobs to create 1 000 000 McJobs isn't going to help his tax base or garner any support from the middle class. It's not like Ontario has an oilpatch or a manufacturing sector anymore, so where are these jobs going to be created?

There are currently 27 ministries, Hudak wants to reduce them to 16.
Maybe that's where the cuts would be made.

Taking 100,000 tax consumers out of the economy and lowering taxes accordingly would be a boost to the private sector by reducing costs and by making available a talented pool of labor for the new jobs.

Not a good move on the party of Hudak but I do agree with his plans for more apprenticeships. It's his election to lose..

I guess it all stands on where Ontarians (?) stand on austerity and having Mike Harris #2 running the government.
To make it happen, he'll probably do what Klein did here and privatize a bunch of ministries.
It may help the provincial bottom line, but if Alberta is any indication, it doesn't do much to lower costs or increase service for residents over the long term. In the short term, there may also be a bump in revenues as the assets of those ministries are sold.

I think that he just lost the election, today. The Ontario civil service is certainly lardy and needs to lose weight. Hudak's claim is that if you eliminate 100,000 public service jobs, the Ontario economy will spring back to life and create A MLLION MORE! Why doesn't he just say a Gajillion? A couple of hundred thousand AT BEST, let's say, so combine that with the loss of 100,000 public service jobs and you've "created" 1000,000. Ontario's problems largely originate in other parts of the world as it slogs towards post-industrialism.

The private sector isn't very interested in setting up shop where the highest hydro rates on the continent are. Anything that stuck around after the FTA and NAFTA pretty much bailed the hell out as hydro rates skyrocketed. Business and corporate taxes are already lower than in the US, lowering them further will put even more of the burden on the individual taxpayer who's been getting smacked around with sticker shock from their hydro bills.
I'd borrow an idea from France (yeah, I'm shocked too but it was a good idea at the time for them). Anything that's left in the industrial/manufacturing sector I would give a 5 year freeze on payroll taxes to encourage the creation of extra shifts where factories are only running a single shift per day. The same offer would be made to any new industries that located in Ontario. They would still remit payroll deductions on behalf of their employees of course, they just wouldn't be required to match them.
Still though, Ontario would still need to cut hydro rates to really make it attractive. Having two separate govt organs playing the hydro game doesn't help either. IN fact, there's a GREAT place to cut useless govt jobs, get rid of either the OPG or the OPA.

Also, there is another unnecessary layer of electricity re-sellers here. Where I live, for example, Oakville Hydro buys the power from OPG, then sells it to me. I don't know exactly what Oakville Hydro does. They maintain the local grid I guess but here is yet another layer of bureaucracy that goes along with them. In Quebec, you buy your power from Hydro Quebec and they don't have this extra toll booth along the way.
