[B] Hi guys, I'm coming to Winnipeg by September. I will be very happy if someone would be kind enough to provide me or give any recommendation on a nice and cheap apartment in Winnipeg. Me and my family are coming from manila to settle there permanently. Can anyone give me an advice on how much and what is the best place to be near a school for my kids. Thank you very much in advanced :) :) God Bless :) :)

Cheers,

Bravo2

Are you looking for a house or an apartment? Right now the Winnipeg real estate market is experiencing something unusual, a seller's market. While cheaper than most other cities, prices for homes and rent are increasing. I just hope that you are ready for cold winters. We were home for the past two winters and that was enough to make us return to the tropics (although right now i'm missing cooler temperatures).

Hi lily and sheperdsdog, Thank you for your reply. Yes I have 3 kids, an 11, 9 and 7 all are boys. I would try to do as what you have suggested. By this time I am planning to come there only with my wife so as to have ourselves settled first and find a job. Then at around 4-5 months we will pick up our kids from the manila. By that time we hope that everything would be fine for our kids and we should have decided on which school and place best serves.

Taiwan is very much closer to the philippines than China. Hehe Thanks neighbors.... God Bless you all :) :)

Why Winnipeg?

Bravo2 @ Thu Aug 11, 2005 8:38 pm

Hi ziggy :)

Well, my relatives have been in winnipeg since 1970's and I was approved as a Manitoba Provincial Nominee when I applied as a Marketing Manager. I have been with Siemens Power Generation, a German based Company with tie ups in Westinghouse Power. I guess, I have to be in winnipeg being their nominee..... :) :)... God Bless ziggy.....

Cheers,

We've got a reasonably large number of people who moved here from the Philippines. You might want to check with your relatives to see what part of the city they are in, Bravo. This link has some pretty good information on relocating here.

Personally, I would recommend River Heights as a good area to set up a home. It's quiet, lots of good schools, close to downtown and has great shopping. Two years ago, we bought a house in the area, just off of Academy on Cambridge, so I'm partial to the area (God, I miss Santa Lucia, Papa Georges and Corydon Avenue in general) and I'm counting the days until my contract is over. Your best bet though, is to rely on your family who've been there for years and can give you the best advice.

Hi ShepherdsDog, :)

Yes you have a point there. I will ask my relatives if they could recommend a nice place. Also thank you for the suggestions.

But I'm still open to any other suggestions and looking forward for any recommendations especially from you guys who are quite nice on answering my query.... :)

By the way, Were experiencing heavy rains here in Manila. Do you also experience this typhoon in Taiwan?

God Bless.... :)

Cheers,

No, it's cloudy and windy, really windy. The storm is going to be mostly to the south of us. At least the humidity is down though, so we don't need to use the AC.

Same here, filipinos are quite used to having heavy rains at this time of the years. We expect around 20-35 typhoons in a year. We like it when everything is cool coz we experienced recently a very hot summer. :) :) Are you married to a taiwanese or on business? just asking :)

No, my wife is Canadian too. She runs the English program at one of the local highschools. She taught at home for a few years and was a Principal for a couple, but prefers teaching here. Taxes and deductions are a killer. I'm here on Kinmen doing contract work, for the construction of a new dam/resevoir upgrade. Landmines have to be cleared out of the area first.

Seems like a tough job. :) I myself have upgraded my skills. I was most of the time into sales for around 10 yrs. got contracts too with siemens germany. But lately, upon deciding to migrate, I went to a government funded Trade School which is the only recognized Technical School. I went for 3 types of Welding course, SMAW, MIG and TIG ( Aluminum Welding) coz from what I've heared is the hardest but in demand of all the welding process..... Well, the storm is over now from here.... :) Pls. give my best regards to your family.. :) God bless
