MONTREAL - A 33-year-old Sûreté du Québec officer died early Sunday morning after being hit by a passing car while he conducted a speed radar operation north of Montreal.

In August, a “Move Over” law came into effect in Quebec. It requires motorists to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and Transport Quebec vehicles stopped on highways. If they can’t move over, drivers are supposed to slow down and put as much distance as possible between themselves and the stopped vehicle. People who break the law could face fines of $200 to $300 and the loss of three demerit points.
My prayers go out to the deceased Officer's family. Charges need to be brought forth against the individual that was responsible for the Officer's death. The "Move Over" law was was introduced specifically to avert a tragedy of this type from occuring in the first place. Ignorance is no excuse, and I'm hoping that this individual is charged with vehicular manslaughter.

wow, a whopping $300 and 3 demerit points. How about making it a three strike rule where if you get caught three times they crush your car right in front of you and ban you from driving for life.

I live in Québec... I was driving today and passed a cop beside his motorcycle on side of the highway with his radar gun in hand... absolutely no lights flashing on the bike. Pretty much didn't see him until I was beside him. If they want the "move over" law to work, that's not the way to do it.

Following heavy traffic... and I wasn't in the right side lane.
