Quite the sight.
The press proclaim Premier Notley a star on the national scene, a warrior defending the interests of Albertans, a modern-day Joan of Arc, rhetorical sword in hand for a most righteous cause.
Even some conservatives swoon, regaling us with accounts of the premier's courage under fire, handing out kudos to our fearless leader.
It is all most touching.
In fact, Notley is buying into the Trudeau carbon tax plan.
She is all for it. She is willing to embrace it. She wants to make it work. The dollar figure the Liberals rolled out had been discussed. What came out from Ottawa was not new.
The Notley NDP just didn't know it would be made public Monday.
Notley just wants a pipeline to tidewater. A lot of smart money is already on a green light for Kinder Morgan's pipeline expansion to the B.C. coast.
In the unlikely event it's a thumbs-down, Notley believes the feds would still much prefer to work with the provinces. Oooh.
Methinks the prime minister isn't losing sleep.
In 2017, Albertans will pay the NDP carbon tax almost two-thirds in this province oppose.
In 2018, the NDP carbon tax rate on Albertans will go up.
Albertans will also pay that increased carbon tax rate in 2019 and 2020.
In 2021, the carbon tax rate will go up again and Albertans will pay still more because Trudeau wants it so.
In 2022, the carbon tax rate will go up one more time and Albertans will open their wallets yet wider.
When Calgary's Mayor Nenshi heard the final carbon tax number he said: "Wow, that's high."
No kidding.
Notley is not backing down on the NDP carbon tax, the one she did not run on in the last election.
The premier goes further and says the higher carbon tax hit on Albertans, courtesy of the Trudeau Liberals, "can be accommodated" as long as there's a pipeline.
The Notley government is "happy to be a willing partner" if they get a pipeline.
Whatever.
The carbon tax at the pump will start at 4.49 cents a litre and then go to 6.73 cents a litre and eventually top out at 11.2 cents a litre.
Heating your home will go up about $340 a year, including the Trudeau hike. These are modest estimates based on provincial government math. Others peg the cost much higher.
Notley once again points there will be rebates for 60% of Albertans, though fewer than half of the two-parent families in the province will get one.
The NDP will even give serious consideration to bigger rebate cheques for some as the carbon tax goes up.
After all, a higher carbon tax equals more moolah. Whoopee.
Corporations will scoop up plenty of carbon tax money for their green schemes as the provincial government spreads around the giveaway dough to keep the suits from getting grumpy.
There will be many dollars for furnace upgrades and the like. Unlike Kermit the Frog, it will be easy to be green.
The heat of opposition will cool, discontent will go down, poll numbers for the carbon tax will go up.
So it is hoped. And why not?
After all, this is a province who elected PC governments spending us into a deep hole, replacing it with a party ... yes, look in the mirror ... vowing to spend more money than its competitors.
This is a province with the bumper sticker praying God grant another boom while promising not to piss it away and every boom is pissed away.
Smart people figure Albertans and their government will eventually roll over like a cat looking for a belly scratch.
For her part, Notley says if the carbon tax is done right it will "act as a stimulus" and help Mother Earth and diversify the economy.
When asked what she would say to those already upset with the NDP carbon tax when they see they will be paying an even steeper tab?
"The world is moving forward on these issues," says Notley.

Just align your tax with the fed's schedule and all the money stays in Alta. I fact I believe Trudeau said whatever money the feds collect from a province will be returned to that province. But why take the chance - just set the provincial rate to match the feds, and the province will keep the money.

Again, I am not opposed to the carbon tax. But offset it with steep reductions to income tax and some business tax reductions.

We have 3 Million square kms of carbon sucking boreal forest in Canada, I want someone to pay me in carbon credits. I'm pretty sure that covers our 1.8% of the worlds emissions.
