My last event as a Scout was a winter camp-out. After following train tracks for miles and miles, we ducked into a grove and set up camp; got fires going; collected snow in pots and prepared our meals.
Unfortunately, one of our group had, apparently, failed in obtaining his "Before you put a can of beans in the pot, be sure to open the can"-badge.
The explosion created a number of "personal hygiene" challenges and, for the remainder of the afternoon, the campground looked like a bunny-hutch.
So, I bailed and spent the next 4 years in Sea Cadets. This was an opportunity to wear a truely, dorky hat.
But they had a drum corps and I was taught rudimental drumming. That's been worth a fortune!
I did, however, retain the vicarious "bean preparation" lesson.
