... as an atheist

I honestly don't know what to think of this... I can't say I've had to deal with such an event personally, as my household was never religious.

On one hand, I'm impressed by the kids ability to express himself to his parents, but on the other hand, I'm troubled by the mother's reaction, and how it would affect their family life.

We celebrated christmas looooooooooong before the catholic church arrived. Santa Clause isn't exactly a catholic saint. Dumb ass

   

Michael rocks. And that mother - what a cow! Also kind of funny how dad just looks quietly along; must be used to seeing lots of arguments between wife and son.

It must be a real drag to live in a household where the parents (or at least one of them) have such a shallow and empty take on their faith.

Actually he was an Armenian bishop. Our ancestors didn't celebrate Christmas before Christianity arrived in north western Europe, we celebrated the advent of the Winter Solstice. Many of the pagan traditions were adopted when it was christianized. So you werer wrong on both accounts. At the time Saint Nicholas lived the Church hadn't splintered and we didn't celebrate Christmas long before the Catholic Church arrived.

Hell, if it was my mother I wouldn't even bother to listen to her but I can imagine what happened.
She's trying to raise her kids the way she thinks is good. She probably uses the church and believe as the basic principles to live her life and then suddenly a rebellious teenager tells her that all she believes in is BS. I think I would go insane too if one of my children tells me the way I raised them was wrong.

Imagine that you are an atheist and your daughter turns 18 and says: Thank you mom and dad but I'm gonna join the Jehovas or better I'm going in a monastery. I don't know how I would react.

   

No, I wasn't wrong. If your Santa Clause isn't the same as ours.. then tough luck. WE, and by we I mean Swedes, cellebrated christmas long before christianity arrived. Christmas is called Jul here and has no indication of christian influense. Neither has Santa Clause as you call him.. we call him Tomten. Again, no christian influnce. Our traditions lived on even after christianity arrived and the Church tried to ban them.
There was ofcourse a hell of an outcry and people were killed as a result but the church didn't stop there. They simply changed strategy and instead tried to incorporate Jul into christianity and turn it into a christian holliday celebration.

   

You are wrong on many accounts. First your Santa Clause is the same as ours. They are all the same, bassed off the same person. Second, Canadarc is right about the astral cults rituals. Third, Sanata Clause came after the church, look back in history and you will see. The church is over 2000 years old. The first folk lare invovling Sanata Clause is much, much more recent. Only with in the last cenertry. I am sorry but you are wrong.

   

I never wrote that Tomten pre-dates christianity. He is based parchely on the German Saint Nicholaus and folk lore where tomtar were frequent in our daily lifes. It's not a christian saint.
Jul, however, (as the name itself suggests as it is "ancient" norse )pre-dates the arrival of christianity in what we today call Sweden. It's a celebration of the longest night of the year and we also celebrate midsommar which is a celebration to the longest day of the year.
