Full title:

$1:
Scientists Achieve Direct Counterfactual Quantum Communication For The First Time

Best part:

$1:
"After the communication of all bits, the researchers were able to reassemble the image - a monochrome bitmap of a Chinese knot. Black pixels were defined as logic 0, while white pixels were defined as logic 1 ...

In the experiment, the phase of light itself became the carrier of information, and the intensity of the light was irrelevant to the experiment."

MUCH more at the link.

Here's my takeaway: This form of communication can't be monitored, it can't be tapped, and it doesn't need to be encrypted. [cheer]

The organs of the police state will surely want this stopped. :|

Aim it out into space with a warning for aliens not to come here because the place is too embarrassingly full of complete fucking idiots.

yet another luxury for only the richest of our societies

Not this. If it works out it'll make your ISP irrelevant. You'll just buy a computer or phone that has a quantum interface and then you won't ever have to pay for communications ever again.

Yea. Someone will want to tax it. It's just like off grid water, electricity, etc. If the corporations and gubberment can't make money off of it in the long term, they wont let it happen.
