Building a planet-sized space-station sounds pretty spendy to me. More fascist than fiscally conservative.

   

Nothing is 'spendy' when you have cheap/free labour and a galaxy of resources at your disposal.

One thing that always cracked me up about Star Wars...we have droids, but we still employ slaves....because that makes senses. Why wouldn't you want a large segment, of your workforce, extremely disgruntled and ripe for rebellion.

   

I can't think of any reason

   

Lower acquisition, maintenance, and disposal costs I suppose.

   

Well, American farmers seem to prefer to pay illegal workers around $2 an hour to pick fruits and vegetables instead of investing in merchandised harvesting.

   

Also, droids in the star wars universe are practically sentient, like Lord grievous. They can turn on you just as easily. For those who aren't, they go where the program tells them to go so a good hacker could turn your whole army against you with the flip of a switch. Living creatures can be loyal, or at least predictable.

According to "wookiepedia", which I just googled, he was a humanoid being called a Kaleesh, and after he was injured in an explosion he became a cyborg.

   

In a scenario where you would have a galaxy spanning empire, resources would be, for all real purposes, infinite. Maintenance is just as easily handled by other droids, and disposal is back to the resource stage.


Time to get my geek on.

Grievous isn't a droid. He is a Kaleesh cyborg. (I had this explained to me, in no uncertain terms, by one of my children...who is a massive SW geek.) Edit...beaten to it.

As for intelligent droids...well, SW seems to run from barely capable of completing basic tasks all the way to almost sentient, so just build what you need for the task at hand. That also fixes your hacking issue. A 'construction droid' doesn't need wireless communication. Program, deploy, retrieve, and reprogram as required.

I hate to say it, but this is one of the reasons that I never got really big into SW (or ST for that matter)...they always seem to run into these massive problems that their as shown tech would have easily overcome with even an ounce of foresight.

Finally...there is no reason you can't have a harem while not employing a massive slave army at the same time. These are mutually exclusive items...

Using slave labour sends a message, not just to the Rebellion but to the thousands of planets that were reticent or un-cooperative with the switch from Republic to Empire. Do what you're told or else your people get sent to slave away in mines, jungles, iceworlds, and any other unpleasant place the Imperials can dump troublemakers.

Interesting thing here in the Empire would have been nailed by an economic catastrophe from the loss of resources and finances that went into the building of not one but two Death Stars. The excessive taxation and plundering that went into building them would have been a complete write-off. Even if the bulk of the Imperial Star Fleet was still intact (they really didn't lose too many ships at Endor), how much of it would have ended up in dock (or joined the Rebellion) because there was no more money to keep them operating, not to mention mutinies from crews not getting paid, as well as emboldened Rebel attacks all over the galaxy after the deaths of Vader and Palpatine?
