Wireless Speakers

Starting to think about Christmas presents, and I'm wondering how decent wireless speakers are. I'm looking for something that would go in the same room as the stereo amp, but about 30 - 40 feet away. Price isn't an issue at this point.

Has anyone used them? I bought a pair of fairly expensive Advent wireless headphones a few years ago, and found that they still had problems with interference - they randomly lose the signal, blasting my ears with static. I haven't started looking around, but I figured I'd check to see if the speakers are worth considering.

No offense, but personally, I tend to stay away to non-ionizing radiating devices... Today, It's not a matter of IF you are gonna get cancer... it's WHEN!!! Food for thought.
Sorry to ruin your Xmas idea

BTW-> I do own a cell phone but its only in case of emergency

I'm not particularly worried about that - ionizing is what causes cancer or genetic damage, so obviously non-ionizing radiation isn't a hazard.

On the plus side, I happened across this website, so I'll have a look at it tonight: http://www.wireless-speakers.org

Well, when one uses wireless speakers, i have always found that there is a slight delay since the signal has to transmit from the transmitter to the stereo.

It's a nice X-mas gift to have, but i'd stick to the wired ones...

Nice website you found Blue! I learned some new things i never knew about...

Ouch, I didn't know about the delay - they'd be in use with regular wired speakers, so that is something to watch for. Maybe my time would be better spent trying to figure out how to run some wires without ripping up too many walls!

Thanks for the heads up, Dosenbier!

Run them behind your baseboards

The room that I'm planning on putting them in is long and narrow with doors along the sides, so there's no baseboard that goes from one end to the other. I'm also planning on having the speakers up near the ceiling, so I'm thinking the wires are going to have to run along the ceiling and drop down.

Electricians must have to deal with running wires through existing walls all the time, so there must be some way to do it.

Yup. 'Fish line'. It's a metal line that you drill a small hole in to a wall, then poke the fish in through until you reach another hole at the other end for your speakers. You have to follow ethier the rafters, or studs in the walls. If the ceiling in the room is on the top floor, you can fish from the attic. If it's in the basement, and drywalled, it's a little tougher. It might require some drywall patches and re-painting.

But, think about this for a minute BN. You've found out wireless has delays in transmission, and even if you have a delay programmable decoder, you will still not be able to remove all the delays in sound, so you won't be able to set it up totally correctly to account for the shape of your room. And there is still the issue of running 'power' to the speakers, so you are going to have to 'fish' something if you want to keep everything hidden.

Might as well just go for the better sound quality and fish signal wire at the same time.

Me, I ran a pine 'chair stop' all the way around the room (concrete walls with 2" behind the drywall and insulated, try fishing that!!) and hid my wires in there.

Yeah, I think I've abandoned the wireless option.

The gift is for my father, and even though I'm sure it can be done, I'm not sure "Merry Christmas, I'm cutting holes in your walls" will go over so well.

Maybe I'll just sneak into the house when he's out for the day
