Newfoundland rink world champions!

$1:
CORNER BROOK — The mens' senior curling team from Corner Brook has won the world senior curling championships in Sweden.

The Bas Buckle rink won the gold medal game Friday morning, beating the United States 8-3.

At the end of six ends, the team had a four-point lead. "It was a good feeling being up by four with two ends left to play," Buckle says.

"So we just kept it fairly clean and didn't want to just guard it, giving up a big end, so we pretty well knew we were on our way then."

The Corner Brook curlers were undefeated heading into the final game.

Buckle's rink includes mate Bob Freeman, second Gerry Young and lead Harvey Holloway.

A welcome home motorcade is being planned for Deer Lake airport when the team arrives back in the province Saturday night.

The senior competitions were being held in conjunction with the world curling championships in Gavle.

Canada's Mark Dacey ended the mens' round robin with a 9-0 record. Coleen Jones' rink goes into the playoff round with 6-3 record.
