No More Indian Names for College Teams!

I guess we could name the teams after rocks or something like that.
Don't forget the geologists!
Montreal Canadiens will need a new name if they don't want to offend the seperatists... if anyone cares what they think, that is

You know Blue Nose, I am very suprised that never went further. I mean the actual name. People in Qc (separatists) do not seem to be ravished by it. Yet, not much is mentioned.

. Back then, upon the team name (something like years ago) Qc people did not mind it as much.

I wonder if it has to do with the etymological root of the name, “Canadiens”. Doesn’t that refer to the culture that existed in Quebec after conquest? In many ways it might compliment the separatist’s as it’s a celebration of the “original” Canadians.
I think the PC shock troops have gone too far as well. While some nicknames may offend some (what is absolutely non-offensive to everyone? Come on) some represent (in an innocuous way – especially sports teams) a tradition for their supporters as well. At some point, someone needs to realize there are real issues in society and by focusing on knee-jerk protestations, it cheapens and trivializes real problems. Besides, why hasn’t someone thrown a fit about the Boston Celtics or the aboriginal place names that pepper our geography? It can go too far. Here’s a great example.

Well, there is a lot of information out there on this topic, including statements from individuals who of are of NA aboriginal descent, and some of their larger cultural and professional organizations. Do a little googling, then you can give your opinion. I don't know what percentage of any given tribe finds native mascots and logos offensive. Maybe it's only a vocal few, and the PC crowd just followed them blindly to make themselves feel good. Maybe most first nations peoples have no problem with it. But it makes interesting reading.
When comparing native team names/logos/mascots to other cultural groups, keep in mind the whole genocide thing that happened. I mean, if you named, say, a new basketball team the Toronto Tutsis (Tutsis are known to often be taller), do you think everyone would think that's cool? I think it seems sort of disrespectful. And that's only one angle on the whole thing. Maybe in Canada you learn more about first nations peoples in school than in the US. There's a concern that the main image younger kids get of "indians" are via these teams/logos/mascots, which have nothing to do with the actual cultures.
Here's one individual's FAQ on the issue: http://www.iwchildren.org/barb.htm
Anyway, yeah, it can lead to absurdities, and even after reading some more you might still think it's no big deal. But at least you can acknowledge their point of view.
I think we should stick with elements from the periodic table.

And what happend during a game if we loose elcrtons ..... come on ride the chain.. whoo whoo.. LOL
probbaly been no problem if the organizations,institutions...just showed respect with the "Native Name,Logo" being used to represent them.
Allowing team mascots to portray a savage image etc should have been stopped. Also get imput from the Native Elders what they thought we be in good taste...
All comes down to marketing, and $$$$.A percentage of the revenue from all pro sports teams that use "Native Names,Logo.." goes to the Native Indian culture, education, medical care.. would help
