Allright, now there's something that I can never get through to myself. Now Hockey is apparently not very popular in the States, it doesn't recieve a large television audience, the attendance at games is nowhere near NBA level. What gives?

So I just wanna ask the NON-HOCKEY FANS in this forum...what's so bad about hockey? Too violent? Too slow? too boring? (and if so how) Not enough intensity? What?

I mean I have no idea how a sport AS SLOW AND MIND NUMBING as baseball, can actually recieve high ratings. While hockey, a quick paced, hart-pounding, action packed, FIGHTS ALLOWED, high intensity, testosterone-charged, 100 miles an hour flying puck...get low ratings.

I don't understand that.

Though I don't qualify as NON-HOCKEY FAN, but I must say that the American Beer did it for me once when I was over there... :D

You probably have to think that Baseball is Americas past time, while hockey is just another sport. Now, Hockey is watched by quite a few people still, just not as much as baseball because it's Americas past time. Go to Brazil and you will find tons of soccer fans. I think you just have to accept that different countries like different sports more...

Lets not forget that there have been a few fights in baseball, and what's great about them is that they aren't allowed, it makes them a little more special...

I find nothing wrong with hockey, and like watching it, but my main reasons for watching a sport aren't because its "testosterone-charged" or because there will be fights, and so on. When I do want to watch something like that I watch a football game, which is still different because it's all about making plays. You set up 1 play, and try to run it, and sometimes you have to improvise. Alot of other countries don't get, or like American football, but I'm an American, grew up with it, and it's probably my favorite sport. Like I said, different countries will often times be into different things. Just have to accept the differences...

I hyave grown up with hockey. I played it for 7 years (until they merged 2 age levels and I didn't have the size to compete...or survive 8O). When the game is on....SHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh!! Wait till a comercial unless it is game commentary. Lately however (and not just 'cause the strike) we have enjoyed junior hockey more. We can actually take all 4 family members to a junior hockey game for less than the price of a ticket to one NHL game. But if I start ranting here, this'll turn into more of a "Hockey Lockout" forum.

Bottom line however, I still love hockey.

They just can't relate to hockey down south, IMO. It's not part of their tradition like it is here. You could play hockey anywhere in Canada, in some locations outside during the winter. We grow up watching, playing hockey. There is no ice in Louisiana, for example. It's alot more accessible to play football, baseball and basketball in the States. Those sports are also alot cheaper to play than hockey with all the equipment needed and can be played outside on the grass or the court.

I don't believe it has anything to do with violence. American's love violence in sports, like football, wresting etc.

Certain teams in the States, like the origional six (Boston, New York, Detroit, Chicago) hockey is alot more popular in those cities. They are closer to Canada, they have snow and ice, the environment is more hockey friendly.

Hockey was popular in the 80's and early 90's in the States. But the game has changed and is broken now. The game was more marketable then as well (Gretzky, Lemieux), goal scoring was higher, there was less stick work back then (hooking, holding), no playing the trap. The game had more scoring, fighting, intensity, rivalry in those days.

It's harder for people to follow and cheer for players they don't relate to. Not alot of hockey players come out of Jacksonville or New Orleans. Players that grow up in Canada, that play in his home town for years, the local people in his community relate to him, follow his career, and will still want to follow his career after he moves on to the NHL.

Hopefully the "power that be" can fix the game of hockey and make it better, more exciting and more marketable in the States as well. At least, once we get our season back.

well...ok, even though I'm not proud of this, I'll admit that I don't live in Canada! I live in Las Vegas. Possibly the hottest damn city in the US and I ADORE hockey! Hockey is actually very much liked here in Vegas. We try to go to a Wranglers game at the Orleans Centre, it's effin packed!!! The line-ups are extremely long, but lucky for my mom and I, we get free tickets and the line-up that we wait in to recieve them is normally short. But getting in and out of the parkade can take a loooooooooooooong time. But, yeah. Hockey is special in this city. :D But I still wanna leave it. I don't want to offend anyone, but I hate the US. It's the worst country in the world. All the Americans do is go to war!! but I'll shut my mouth now and be a good little girl.  AND REMEMBER BOYS AND GIRLS! HOCKEY ROCKS! IT'S A SPORT LIKE NO OTHER!

I think canucker is on to it. Hockey is popular in most of the states that border Canada, as well as New England. It is just beginning to catch on in the south, with franchises like the Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes etc etc. Not too many pick up games on frozen ponds in the south either so it isn't going to be quite as popular down there.

The bisg problem is hockey history. There is no hockey history in Nashville or Atlanta so the people who live there don't really know too much about the sport and have grown up on Baseball or football and have a connection with it. Tough for a "winter" sport to take roots in places where it don't snow. Most of the best US hockey players come out of the nrth eastern states where hockey has history.
