Rome For A Week
Hello folks
My partner and I are going to Rome for a week during the beginning of April. We've never been to Italy before, so we need your help! I would appreciate it if you could offer sites providing cheap but nice accommodation. I already looked into booking and airbnb. Also, I want to get an advice on how much money we should bring with us, so that we have enough to eat out, for sightseeing and stuff. If you know some nice restaurants that you would like to suggest, don't hesitate to leave a comment!
I hope you can help us out.
Ps. I already did a bit of research, I am just looking for tips from people who have been there and have some experienced!
Thank you in advance!!!

cheap but nice accommodation.
Yeah.
No.
Choose one. If it's nice, it won't be cheap.
Stay away from Termini station, especially at night.

Make sure you investigate the neighborhood the room is located before you book. Not all hoods in Rome are safe.
Stay away from anything remarked as an 'immigrant' or 'multicultural' hood.

Rome has a hundred gazillion tourists 24/7. Prices reflect that fact.
All attractions, museums, Colosseum, etc. will have entrance price 10-20 euro per person.
And security wait of at least an hour. And it will be worse than the airport. And I'm not kidding.
Book your tickets online in advance if you can.
Don't eat near the tourist attractions.
Money depends on what you want to do.
Doing nothing special would still cost 100 euro per person per day.
Funny, I've never been to Rome. Hope you have a good time! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif)

Talked to enough people who've been there that the north of Italy is the only place to go. Rome and southwards is pretty scummy. Too much crime and a garbage collection system that's been broken since the 1970's going by the piles of trash that are left out in the open everywhere.
Trastavere is a great neighbourhood for restaurants. The only hotel we liked was chosen because it was near the airport but it turned out to be on the sea beside the mouth of the Tiber:

The taxi driver who brought us there played Maria Callas all the way. How often does that happen in Canada? AirBnB may offer better value than the hotels.
Of the sights, I really enjoyed St. Peter's, stunning in both scale and beauty when seen in real life. The gallery that sticks in my mind is the Borghese:

Which contains extraordinary sculptures by Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio. You have to book ahead to get in.
I also got a big kick out of the church of St. Agnes (Beyond the Walls), partly because I read a book about it by Margaret Visser and also because I had the place almost to myself one wonderful afternoon.

The ruins from Ancient Rome are, of course, worth seeing after all we have heard about them over the years, although more knocked about at this stage than the churches. In particular, the Colosseum retains a sinister grandeur. We were surprised by the number of Bangladeshis selling flowers and souvenirs beside it, even dressed as gladiators, but they were harmless. The lads to watch are the Roma at the train stations who offer to help you and then demand money.
IMO Rome, like Athens, is a place one has to see at some point in life. It's a key element in the story of Western civilization. I can't wait to return.
Welcome to Italy !!
Japanese diners call police after they are charged £1,000 for three steaks and fried fish in Venice
Outraged visitors - from the University of Bologna - ordered steak and fish meals
As they had just water to accompany their meal, they were shocked at £1,009 bill
Mayor of Venice said he would investigate to see if 'shameful incident' happened

I have been to St. Marks.. ordered coffee.. nothing else.

Apparently, very few of the restaurants near St. Mark’s Square are still owned by locals:

I guess we will have to look very carefully at the price lists!

Thank you so much for the useful information, we will check out the hotel. I am genuinely scared of being scammed in an Airbnb, so I don't know what we are going to do. But thank you, I appreciate the help!

Thank you so much, we will try to be as careful as possible, hopefully, we can find some nice local restaurants. I have to look more into the neighborhoods than, I will do my best to book a good one. If we find a good offer in the center near the majority of sightseeing we might stay there, hopefully there it will be safer.
Thanks for all the other comments and suggestions!
Here’s some good news on the Venice overcharging incident:

That’s odd. It just worked for me. It won’t work if you have visited the website too often and you’re not a subscriber.
