Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:
Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."
The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

Obama called Sarah Palin a pig - according to Drudge this was at a speech today. This is rapidly becoming breaking news.

It's the same thing as saying candy coating, same shit different pile, making a silk purse out of a sow's ear or as userless as tits on a boar. it's not a commentary on Palin personally, just what they rightfully or wrongfully think of the Republican platform in general. All they are saying is that they[Republicans] are trying to repackage and disguise the same thing, and hopefully fool the electorate.
People are making a mountain out of a mole hill or creating a tempest in a teapot, and will end up cutting their noses off to spite their face if they get too carried away with it.
Personally, I've never heard this exact usage, but I have heard people say, "It's like putting perfume on a pig".

The issue is blowing up on Obama big time. In the context that Palin essentially called herself a 'pitbull with lipstick' the lipstick thing is tied to her and Obama isn't getting any wiggle room on this even from the local liberal media in Sacramento.
