Making it harder for a specific group of people to vote subverts democracy.

How is this difficult to understand?

   

Opening new precincts between primaries and the general election would create confusion and ultimately lead to urban residents going to the wrong precinct and not being able to vote. IT would have reduced the number of people voting in key democrat areas, which is exactly what the republicans wanted.

There is a reason this was voted on between the primary and the general.

   

Any good authoritarian knows you don't do anything in one shot. It's little baby steps, leading to an end result.

   

You are claiming that the new law is making it harder for a specific group pf people to vote, but you are not offering any proof. You always have some of the best links to back up your case on this forum, so go ahead and prove your case. Lets see some OFFICIAL data (not paid pundits and talking heads for the democrat political party). Get into the ACTUAL law and show me where it is making it harder for a specific group to vote. I keep asking. No one has done it so far.

   

Sounds like there is just no pleasing some people. First they bitch about the long lines at the polls. When someone tries to open up more polls to help alleviate the congestion the very same people start bitching about how it is a trick designed to confuse them. I live in one of the fastest growing places in the U.S. I have never voted in the same place twice even though I have lived in the same location for 12 years now, and six before that. Somehow my public school educated white ass managed to make it to the polls for every election. I did not need the government to come pick me up in a special van and take me to and from the polls while providing me with refreshments while I wait in line.

   

On the other hand if you broke your leg and it was a scorching day outside, it's pretty goddam utter assholic to outlaw someone picking you up and offering you a drink of water on the way.

If you can keep them people who appreciate gov't services from voting whele convincing useful idiots to maintain your privilege, it works.

   

That isn't what anyone is claiming, because there hasn't been any voting under the new law yet. Kind of tough to report on the future.

What is being claimed; is this new law, along with many other laws and policies, fit a pattern that leads to minorities losing the ability to vote.

Just because you're being vigilant doesn't mean other people will be, or have the time to be. People are going to (reasonably) expect that if they voted in a primary in x place that the election itself is likely going to be in that same place.

I also enjoy that you're completely ignoring the fact that Kemp was responsible for closing or moving HALF the precincts within the state, purged 1.4 million voters from voting lists, and put thousands of voter registrations on hold, and it all conveniently disproportionately affected black voters. So in a vacuum, I could see how Kemp trying to open new precincts appears to be for noble reasons, but history dictates otherwise. Kemp has a track record of suppressing black voters for almost a decade. Do you really think his tune is suddenly pulled a 180? Or has he just got better at giving ways for republicans to defend him?

Republicans win when less people vote. The more they can prevent people from voting, the more likely they are going to win.

   

The same goes for mail in voters. That's why this bill has provisions for early ballots not being released till 6 weeks before the election. And the request for a ballot must have a stamp on the envelope, as must the ballot when it is returned. Is that going to affect the rich white voter, or the poor black and Hispanic one?

And why do they have to wait in line at all? Why not add more polls? Well the new legislation includes one advanced poll per 100,000 voters or one for each poll site "whichever is SMALLER". With black people already waiting in line for hours, why does this provision exist? Oh yea, so there are fewer advanced polling stations in line with the decline of voting day stations.

How many voting day stations are there in white neighbourhoods, per capita?

   

don't forget that when they do have to wait in line, it's now a crime to give them water.

Fulton county commissioners consist of 7 commissioners. 4 of them are black. 4 against 3 wins every vote, every time. If blacks in Fulton county are getting screwed over at the polls, than blacks are complicit in it.

Chatham county has 6 blacks vs. 3 whites. These are the people calling the shots in the counties. Exactly HOW are the good old boys screwing over the blacks at the polls when they are a minority in every one of these counties commissions? Gwinnett County obtained federal permission in 2010 to reduce the number of polls. Obama was sitting in the White House in 2010. He approved it!!! Where was the outcry from this forum then when Obama was trampling on the voting rights of the blacks in Georgia? Whats that? Crickets chirping? Obama approved it in 2010. A four blacks to 1 white county commission has kept the numbers the same since 2010, yet somehow whites and Republicans are to blame. I call more bullshit!!!

   

So you are giving examples of counties that reduced their polls, and have long lineups. I see articles of Gwinnet County for example that had line ups of 11 hours. What is this proof of? In all my years since attaining majority age, I have never stood in a line to vote for more than 10 minutes. Why do these people, in Black neighbourhoods, have to wait for 11 hours? Do they wait for hours in White neighbourhoods? I find no examples of this. If these election officials can make elections work in White neighbourhoods, then they can work in Black ones too.

And we pointed out the ways that the good old boys are screwing minorities. Like, putting advanced polls in a place that takes 4 bus transfers and 2 hours to get to an early polling station open on Sunday so people can vote and work on election day.

Is it the Black county officials making the laws as to how many polls there will be, how many workers, how early ballots will be issued and counted, whether people get refreshment in the hot Georgia sun? Or is it the Predominantly white and Republican State government?



Wait . . you write that it's county officials that call the shots, then you blame Obama?

It's not Obama, it the Supreme Courts' "Shelby v. Holder" decision in 2013 that eliminated the Feds oversight of predominantly discriminatory election laws. Oversight that wouldn't be needed if the State didn't make discriminatory laws to begin with.

   

I had forgotten about this thread as I was out of commission for a couple of days due to a bad reaction to the vaccine. Do we wait for hours in white neighborhoods to vote? Yes we do! I waited for hours. You say that you see no examples of whites waiting for hours to vote. I say that you are not looking.

This article is from last October, before the general election. The Washington Post went to six different cities in the U.S. to document the long lines for early voting. The whites greatly outnumber the blacks in every picture in every city. You state that the good old boys are screwing the minorities over by putting advanced polls in places that take 4 bus transfers and 2 hours to get to an early polling station. I call bullshit!!! The county AS ALWAYS determines the locations of early voting polls. The new law actually EXPANDS the hours that early voting polls have to be open, but does not say a damn thing about the location. You ask if the black county officials are the ones making the laws about how many polls there will be, how many workers, ect., etc. I do not know what part of this that you are not getting. County officials run elections in Georgia. From the start to the finish, and everything in between. They call ALL the shots. If there is going to be one polling station for the county, or 100,000 polling stations for the county. Its all, ALL up to the county. Nikema Williams who is in charge of the democratic party of Georgia (and also happens to be black) has admitted as much.

This article is from last June, after the clusterfuck primary in Georgia. It clearly states and gives you Georgia law showing how the counties run elections in Georgia. It is a law. It is a fact. It is not up for debate. The article also states that after the embarrassing clusterfuck that the Georgia primaries were that the WHITE REPUBLICAN Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger wanted these counties to pull their heads out of their asses. He proposed a law FORCING these counties to step up and do their jobs at the polls. EVERY SINGLE DEMOCRAT voted against it. They claimed that it would be to confusing to add polling stations. That is the REAL racism here, claiming that blacks are to stupid to figure out where to vote. They have a website that not only can you register to vote on, you can see all your early polling places to vote as well as where to go vote if you wait until election day.

How could it be any fucking easier than that? You might notice that the evil white Republican's name is on the site. He is helping people figure out where to vote when he is not busy burning flies under a magnifying glass. You bring up the refreshment under the hot Georgia sun. It was already illegal under Georgia law to provide gifts of any value to voters. There is a similar law in the President's own state of Delaware, just as there is in most states.

You state that I blame the county officials and Obama. Yes I do! The county officials are the ones fucking over their people by cutting the number of polling stations. You state that it was "Shelby vs. Holder" that was responsible for the cuts. No it was not. Shelby vs. Holder did not come into effect until 2013. The request was made and approved in 2010, a full three years before Shelby vs. Holder was in effect. Gwinnett county needed approval from the federal government to reduce polling stations in 2010. A federal government that Obama presided over. So yes I DO blame the county and Obama as well. The (black controlled )county for requesting, and (black President) Obama for approving. The blacks totally fucked themselves on this one. They do not get to blame racism and Jim Crow for this one. They made their bed, own it for once.
