TV host urges US to kill Chavez

US religious broadcaster Pat Robertson has called for the US to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Mr Robertson caused controversy with the comments on his TV show, describing Mr Chavez as "a terrific danger".

A spokeswoman for the Christian Broadcasting Network told the BBC: "We are at a time of war and Pat had war on his mind when he made the comments."

An ally of Mr Chavez dismissed Mr Robertson's remarks as "aggression from the right wing in the North".

"This man cannot be a true Christian," said Venezuelan MP Desire Santos Amaral.

'Cheaper than war'

Mr Chavez has accused the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. US officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

Mr Robertson, 75, said on Monday's edition of the 700 Club: "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.

"It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Mr Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, accused the United States of failing to act when Mr Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

His latest comments come amid tense diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the US.

President Chavez is a regular critic of Washington, which regards Venezuela as a possible source of instability in the region.

Venezuela is the fifth-largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States.

The CIA estimates that US markets absorb almost 59% of Venezuela's total exports.

What a crazy idiot. Here we have the US claiming to be fighting against radicals who issue proclamations to war all the while pharisees like Robertson do the same and nothing is made of it.

   

Robertson is a schizoid with delusions of granduer and should be committed to a proper treatment facility for advocating the assassination of the leader of a country that is not a threat to the USA.

I think the whole world has realised how wrong that was and how rotten those "poor Kosovar" ethnic Albanians are.

   

How is this radical cleric any different that a Rush or a Ann Coulter? For the right they find the deep end by having people like this push the limit and trial balloon the public reaction. Depending on the reaction by the public will be how the government chooses its next course of action. It is important to note that not matter what they say they will never lose respect from the media. They may be publicly 'written off' but that is just them taking a hit for the administration. Not everything they say is foreshadowing of what the government is thinking but you can guarantee the government is watch the reaction to every single proclamation to determine public opinion.

This cleric is a former presidential candidate. You don't get groomed for being even considered for that post unless you have some serious backing. Even Ross Perot had to put millions behind his run. What this cleric says is powerful and is just as powerful as what a cleric for Islam would have in their fatwas.

Talk Show Host Graham Fired By WMAL Over Islam Remarks Mike was fired because he stated moderate Islam only wants to kill all Jews and radical wants to kill everyone. This is just another example of how radical the right has become and the reaction to this will determine what the government will deem acceptable in future.

1.3 million barrels a day is at risk or over 10% of the US demand. Pat is going to be written off but that does not mean what he says will be ignored by the people who believe in him. Publicly on the surface no one will be seen agreeing with Pat but you know that there are many sympathetic to that view and it is just under the surface wanting a chance to boil up and explode. He is inciting violence and it is important to note he is inciting violence from a group that has the ear of the president. There has been multiple calls for action like this and when people like Pat cry for it it only validates the action.

   

assassination is cheaper than war should consider the notion that while most people with correct thought processes consider the elimination of Jesus Christ as a proper public hanging there are fools out there that would consider it to be an assassination. They are still quite a pain in the ass, those Christias; especially when they come knocking at noon while one is sleeping due to working midnights. Rome should have just declared war on them.
