The reality is that having some missiles based in Cuba wouldn't have made much of a difference given that the Soviets were about to get the same capability from ballistic missile subs.
And they already had cruise missile subs at the time.
Of course the Soviets were dicks for even bothering to put the missiles in Cuba when they didn't need to, but the same can be said of the Americans: They didn't need to escalate things so recklessly.

1. the US have military bases all over the world and use them to attack sovereign countries and somehow they don't consider selves as dicks...
2. i dropped in the 9/11 foilers thread few times and till now have a problem to vote! the thing is i still cannot figure the difference between the first and the second option in the poll applied to the question posed!
