WHY FREEDOM OF SPEECH SHOULD APPLY TO GOOGLE, FACEBOOK et al
raydan @ Thu May 16, 2019 10:50 am
Facebook isn't a monopoly, there are other social media sites.
Google isn't a monopoly either.

Not sure where the other companies are based out of but for FaceBook. It is a US based company and thus will fall under USA laws. Kind of like how once Google started working in China they have to follow China's laws for what is searched for within China's boarders. Or do I have that wrong about Google and China?
They must respect the laws of the country they are operating in, for their operations.
Which is why FB was fined $5 B by the FTC for privacy breaches.
What is currently being asked is for them to be held to the same laws as your government, not the same laws as every other business.
Too be honest, I am not a fan of social media, which is why I don't participate in it. But, I don't see how removing rights will resolve it, nor how that will stop rights erosion across the remainder of the board.

Wanna bet?
Yes.
Business follows money. Social media is the calling card of the middle class.
World's largest middle class is now China, and India will follow soon.
They are already one foot out the door.

The sites in question are far more dependent on the work of an Englishman than anything else.
The internet, without http is nothing to the average user. Literally, nothing.
Point of order - "The Web" is a subset of "The Internet". Sir Tim Berners-Lee added
a protocol to an already existing array of protocols that make up "The internet".
I don't know why you argue with them Peck. They don't understand the scope they are arguing.
I own my house. You own yours. I can't come to your house and practice my 'free speech' on your lawn, and you are under no obligation to allow me to. "The Internet" is just the transport medium (roads) that let me go from my house to your house. The 'houses' are computers connected by that transport medium.
'Google' is a collection of computers. They own those servers. They pay a lot of money to maintain and run those servers. CKA is owned by Trevor. He pays to run CKA.
The owners decide what goes on in the properties they own, and they are under no obligation to do SFA to anyone or their 'rights'.

Fiddle is now arguing about monopolies, since all his other arguments have been debunked.

I am well aware. I am also well aware of how many "users" there were pre-http. And how many users there are now.
Http made the internet available to the masses. Take away the masses, and the internet is nothing. No e-commerce, no social media, etc. Also, significantly harder to monetize the operation without the http add-on.

Both make me laugh.

I wasn't sure if you knew or not. I don't mean to geek-splain, but I just had to be sure.
We got along just fine with Archie, Betty and Veronica!

The University of Kiev ran an Archie server up until a few years ago, and Firefox still supported the URLs. Ahh, the days!

Nothing could make me that bored anymore. I'd rather sort the cables in boxes in the server room than subject myself to the inevitable insults that will follow you tearing down arguments with facts.

For here in the US I think one of the problems with censorship issue is the term Social MEDIA ppl see that and instantly think of them as being the same as news media. Thus the people posting are like news papers and here it is FB not allowing their content thus FB "the Gov." is censoring them.

They forget the preamble to your constitution, stating that it's a list of the things the Government may not do. Doesn't say Facebook or Twitter have to.

I recall the axiom "Any large group of people are mostly idiots." Or as George said:
“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” ― George Carlin

The bigger the group, the lower the average IQ.
So that's why we're such a small group here. ![Cheer [cheer]](./images/smilies/icon_cheers.gif)
