$1:
A prematurely grey soul singer from Alabama who was once likened to a drunken dad at a wedding triumphed in the American Idol finale, which drew more votes than have ever been cast for a president in a US election.
Taylor Hicks, 29, emerged as the winner in the finale of the TV show on Wednesday night in which 63m votes were cast. It is the biggest single voting night in the five-season history of the show. In the 1984 US presidential election, 54.5 million voters backed Ronald Reagan - the most votes obtained by a president. British viewers can watch the show tonight on ITV2.

That is just sad, I'm not sayign there is much better voter turn out in Canada, but still, that is just pathetic.

Music crosses all boundaries. Political, social, financial, you name it.

And, despite the new electronic voting machines, voting twice on American Idol is still easier than doing it in an election. Since they do it by telephone, it couldn't be any more difficult than calling once from your regular line and once from your cell phone. And you needn't be 18, you can't be purged from the voter rolls, won't have to wait 5 hours in the rain to vote, etc.

Any idea how the voting goes for Canadian Idol?

I remember reading something about how the Canadian Idol vote mirrors the national vote in that regional biases influence voting patterns (ie. voters from Ontario overshadow the number of voters from BC).

Man, these show can be annoying. The only time I watch these shows is when there are only about 5 or 6 people left. That's when it get's interesting cause all the crap singers and people who basically embarrass themselves are out and it's only the ones that can sing that are left.

Blue_Nose @ Fri May 26, 2006 10:57 am

That grey haired guy couldn't sing for crap. Every other note out of tune, I couldn't even listen to it.

The chick should have won... much better singer (from what I saw of the last episode), and hot as hell.

xerxes @ Fri May 26, 2006 10:57 am

For me the only time they're worth watching is the first few episodes when Simon rips up people's inflated egos.

OXE @ Fri May 26, 2006 11:02 am

 i personaly think it'z all crap right, like if you saw that guy(taylor) on the street you'd probibly not give him a second look....i know i would not. i think next year they should do "american idol-animal showdown" lets give some horse or pig or chicken out there the chance to be a star, cuz you know they would not have the chance any other way EH! hehehehe silly @#$%erz! I avoid "reality TV" like the plague, but if I'm forced to watch, I'd rather watch the people at the beginning making fools of themselfs than the drama queens at the end putting all kinds of false emotion into songs they didn't write.

You take yourself WAAAAY too seriously.

I'd take AI any day over whiny drama queen bloggers.

This is truly depressing, it shows a little too acurately where peoples priorities lie. Voting for someone who will influence your life for 4 years is too much work, but a singer who is forgotten before the credits finish rolling is something to get excited about.

I completely agree

Nice avatar btw

Blue_Nose @ Wed May 31, 2006 4:18 am

Keep in mind who's doing the voting in the case of Idol competitions... probably 75% is 12-17 year old girls.

It's not exactly fair to compare the two.

Zoraja @ Wed May 31, 2006 4:20 am

Yeah I know
