I just had another thought as I pressed submit.

Any money the government thought they were saving by contracting Lockheed Martin will likely be spent trying to get everyone to comply or through any legal action they try and pursue. Sheesh. Shaking head.

rearguard @ Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:13 am

Yeah but Lockheed Martin does not care how much money StatsCan spends, all they care about is that StatsCan keeps on paying for their tainted and untrustworthy services.

Make no mistake, StatsCan works for Lockheed Martin not Canada, otherwise even the most brain dead doughnut eating government worker would have noticed that hiring LM was a very stupid and costly move.

The census form and reminder notice I received was tossed out unnoticed with the rest of the junk mail. I never saw any of the reminder ads, and I'm not even aware that there's a census going on! How the hell can I comply?
Reverend Blair @ Thu Jun 22, 2006 6:24 pm

I haven't received a reminder, nobody has shown up at my door, and I haven't gotten a phone call. I'm feeling kind of left out.

You can always call StatsCan up and ask to join the party.

A Stats Can Supervisor came by tonight and asked me if I had completed the Census form. I said no. She asked if I needed another form. I said no. She asked if I wanted her to complete the form for me. I said no. She asked if I knew that I was required to complete the form. I said yes. Then I asked her if she knew who Lockheed Martin was. She said no. So I told her who LM was, went over their convictions and complete lack of integrity. I told her that LM had designed the software and provided the hardware for Stats Can. She said that it was only statistics and that she would be the only one who knew my name because she would tear the ID part of the form off before sending it in. I guess she thought I'd fallen off the turnip truck recently cause she managed to keep a straight face while feeding me this line of bull. I told her there was no way that I would be providing any info about who my ancestors were or whether or not I was black or south east asian or any other denomination. She said it was only for historical purposes. I asked her why they had hired LM instead of Canadians to do the software/hardware overhaul. She said that they only paid her to distribute the census forms and that was all she knew about the census. I told her that there was no way I would ever consider giving any information to a statistics compnay as incompetent as Stats Can proudly proclaims to be. She said ok and thanked me for my time and left. No threats of prosecution or visitations by any other Stats Can types. Who knows what will happen now.

Interesting. Thanks for posting your experience on the matter. Did you get 3 reminders before the supervisor got involved? So far I've only received one reminder notice and have spoken to no one from StatsCan-LM. My plan is to hold out at least until I get served to go to court assuming it actually gets that far, hopefully we'll have something of a plan on how to deal with the court. I figure the worse thing for Stats Can is to have a lot of protesters in court making a stink.

One has to wonder why they hired LM knowing that it would cause trouble. what we don't know yet, is just how much trouble it has caused. If there are only a few people refusing the census, then they may simply let it slid, but if the number is alrge enough tobe a concern, they may try to follow through on the threats, however that will come with a cost, since you can always comply by lying on the form in a way that is not obvious, thus messing up the data that's collected. Stats Can needs you to comply accurately, and the only practical and cost effective way to ensure accuracy is to have people willingly filling out the forms.

Some more information here:
http://www.countmeout.ca/

In my iddy biddy community I "know" of two people that did not comply and others have said they know of people that have never complied and again one of my sisters has always included all of her pets as family members or made hers illegible. If two people in my tiny community did not comply (and I would guarantee there are more), then the cross-Canada number could be huge!

The statsCan worker that visited us said her boss would have to come back and then the police would be coming...

The ancestral origins have been in the Canadian census for a few years. Sad, because this smells like apartheid that needs to be resisted.

Question 18 could be answered by "don't know". (It is an Australian term; the form does not state "Canadian Aboriginal".)

Maybe "boat people" would be an appropriate answer in the "other" category. All our ancestors were basically "boat people", even those who came cross the Bering Straight. (I personally came by CP Air but also across salt water.)

And then the question: "Place of Birth?" Answer: "In the hospital".

I have enjoyed the posts thus far. I am currently "south of the border" and not part of the Canadian census this time. Keep it up!

Hi. I'm a reporter for a Montreal newspaper, and I'm writing a story on the boycott of the 2006 census. I want to talk with people who are boycotting the census, to ask about their motives and personal experiences. Feel free to contact me:

Kick ass guys, way to go!!!

I sent in my census like a damn fool.

I want to talk with people who are boycotting the census, to ask about their motives and personal experiences.

For me the issue is very basic. I'd be more inclined to cooperate if the census was 100% voluntary, rather than coerced through threats directed at limiting my freedom through imprisonment and additional punishment through financial theft. I think this one issue is rather fundamental, superceeding the other concerns, such as the use of a US defense contractor.

If the census was 100% voluntary, than Stats Can would be many times more sensitive with making sure that their census was not offensive in nature, and issues such as using a US defense contractor would never happen in the first place.
Thank-you Rearguard.

I wonder whether the Census was always "the law" and a failure to comply means "you go to jail"? What's the history?

4Canada @ Tue Jun 27, 2006 9:15 pm

Okay, am I just lucky or what? Third census worker sent away empty handed today. I'm now convinced that Lockheed Martin wanted this contract so they would know where everyone is in Canada, how old they are, and what languages they speak to aid them in a speedy plan for invasion.
I wonder whether the Census was always "the law" and a failure to comply means "you go to jail"? What's the history?
Good question. The history lesson posted on the Stats Can website completely leaves out the go to jail part. My general internet research came up empty as well, the old fashion library will have to be consulted next.
I have sent the following email:

Hi Ivan, (Felligi, Head of StatsCan)

Do you have a history of the Census in Canada?

I would like to know
- when the census started,
- whether in the beginning it was a matter of "Answer the questions. If you don't, you will be prosecuted."

- If this was not the case from the beginning, was there a particular census that was problematic, and led to the current attitude?

SPECULATION ?? IS THERE ANY VALIDITY TO IT?
- I am aware of the difficulties in the Arctic with the collection of census data for the Inuit people beginning in, I believe the 1950's. Somewhere I read the story of census workers - one can only try to imagine the horrendous task of locating nomadic people on the frozen tundra. Non-native census workers had to collect the data; they had to deal with language and cultural barriers, in addition to that unforgiving, completely foreign Arctic environment. The Government employees were doggedly determined to enumerate every single Inuit person. I doubt there was any "sensitivity training".

The story I read left the impression that there was a lot of hostility generated. Understandable. There would have been sabotage given the history of the relationship between Government workers (whites) and the Innuit. The tragic story recorded by Farley Mowat in "People of the Deer" would have been one of many foundation stories for the relationship between the Innuit people and "the Government".

- SO: is it possible that the Government approach is an inheritance from the early attempts to enumerate the Inuit?

I will appreciate if you can share what you know of the historical evolution, or point me to a reference.

I got to wondering about this after reading the appended email from "REARGUARD" to the Vive Le Canada web-site. I am "Dancing" on that web-site.

Thanks, Ivan.

Canada Day is a day to celebrate and renew. May the sun on Canada Day shine on you and your family.

Sandra Finley
Saskatoon
306-373-8078

=============================
REARGUARD WROTE:

For me the issue is very basic.
