The rest of the agreement is worth it? Learn something new every day...

Not surprising that the US would do anything to continue it's protectionist ideals. Look at the BSE thing. The United States government says it will re-open the border and some idiotic judge in Wyoming or where ever grants an injunction against it. NATFA should be scrapped and then Canada can slap tariffs on anything coming into this country. Payback is a bitch. I can see a rather hefty export tariff on Canadian power going into the states.

If the dispute settlement process is not working then the agreement is not a trade agreement but rather a control scheme that favors the stronger party. Why do we need this again?

Perhaps Frank can explain.

Yeah the funny thing about the Bush administration, for all their talk of small government and free trade, is that they hold to some pretty socialist economic policies. The current Washington crowd never met an affluent lobby group they didn't like. Bascially, they've perverted NAFTA and the WTO to their own protectionist ends, to Canadian (and long-term US)
detriment.

The US likes to think of itself as a trading nation: Wasn't it FDR who said, "The business of America is business"? But if you look at the people who built the mythology of Canadian history, it wasn't Generals or even Prime Ministers -- it was the voyageurs, the Indian fur traders and the Hudson Bay Company. I wish that we'd retain more of that free trading tradition in our culture these days, despite the protectionist instincts of our southern neighbours. I wish we cleave to that idea that this nation, above almost all others, was founded on the notion of trade.

Hey ZIP! Your alive! I agree, The US has made the worlds largest deficit in history last year and this year will top even that. There is no way the US is going to side step that little reality.

You all make very valid points, however comparing the fur trade to now is apples and oranges I think. I personally don't favor NAFTA I think many other feel the same way here.

I've seen the man speak. I've also read his book. He wrote it when he was younger and came off anti-American, but I saw him speak a few weeks ago and his message has really matured. He loves his country and has a lot of insight into NAFTA.

NAFTA, just another Conservative way to Americanize the North and South with no benefits to either, The winner here would be ( and is ) the centre ie the US

Hey Scape. Yeah, still kicking. I quit posting here for a while when it got really slow. been hanging out at Scott's place (talkon.ca). But it's nice to see that things are hummig along here.

Not only is the US running a federal budget deficit, but they also have a huge current account deficit (that is the value of exports minus the value of imports). In other words they importing far more than they export. It turns out that China was the big consumer the US had hoped for. Instead China is a big producer, and Walmartians are more than happy to buy cheap Made In China goods.

Martin is cut from the same cloth as Mulroney. Just look at this NAFTA plus crap. For those of us that don't want deeper integration with the U.S., we have 2 options. 1 if we don't live in Quebec.
