As for Americans overwelming Canadians in our own country, Vermont's population is the second smallest in the US after Wyoming. It would have the third smallest population amongst Canadian provinces (assuming everyone would stay) after PEI and Newfoundland and Labrador. <br /> <br />Putting that in perspective, Vermont would only get 8-9 seats in the House of Commons (it currently only gets 1 seat in the House of Representatives). Plus, it would probably get 6 seats in the Senate (like that really has an effect on politics anyway, but bringing Vermont into confederation would require a constitutional amendment, and we might as well solve the Senate problem too) based on the Newfoundland precedent.

Sorry Perturbed, you won`t see that in a million years.[/QUOTE] <br /> <br /> <br />I overestimated Vermont's population, but personally I agree, I would rather if it joined, it joined as a separate province or whatever. <br /> <br />This being said, I doubt many people in Vermont would move north and flood Quebec, and they would be outnumbered anyway. and probably move to the West Island. <br /> <br />When the European community adopted open borders of all things, some people predicted that Europeans cultures would disappear and become a jumble, but it didn't happen. I doubt it would here, but I would never want to see the French language disappear, nor does anyone else I know. It's actually quite a healthy language IMO.

   

Vermont to become the 11th province? Hmm...wouldn't that get the fascists in Washington angry? I personally wouldn't mind but we would have to make sure 90%-100% of the population is okay with the idea in both Vermont and Canada.

   

In the US, Vermont get 2 Sentators like every other state. And US Senators have a alot of power -- the porkbarrelling negotiations means everyone has to get their share. I doubt they get the same advantages in Canada, though they would get a more liberal political culture, medicare etc. <br /> <br />I wonder if they would get equalization payments? I think its mostly dairy and granolas there, but it seems like a propserous place.

   

so not only does vermont have a relatively small population, it also has a bunch of closet francophones. I don't see what the big problem would be if vermont got added to quebec. there are already a bunch of anglo-only pockets in Quebec like Lennoxville & Sherbrooke (I may be wrong...); I don't think that adding Vermont to Quebec would change a lot. <br /> <br />vermont could also be a province by itself i guess. since it's mostly anglo, with many closet french speakers it could be bilingual like new brunswick instead of officially french (like quebec) or officially anglo like the rest.

The Vermont franco closets are probably much further down the path of assimilation than FHQs and would not see why Quebec would treat them mcu differently. [/QUOTE] <br /> <br />But Vermont only gets one Represenatative in the House of Reps, that's a total 3 congressmen; as a showed above, Vermont would get 8-9 MPs in the HoC, and possibly upto 6 Senators.

   

Yeah but you're all pretending that everybody in Vermont are necassarily "progressive" or "liberal", ie leftwing. Thats not entirely true and you must realize that just as there are huge contrasts between Canadian and American conservatism, there are also huge contrasts between Canadian and American liberalism. I know it will never happen, there movement is about as strong as the petition in BC to join the U.S., but if Vermont ever did they would definately bring in strong elements of not only American style politics, but also American culture. And what with free trade and globalization and all, we have all of the American culture we need! <br /> <br />If I were Prime Minister, I would except the Turks and Cacaos in as a province, but I would be more reluctant in accepting a U.S. state. <img align=absmiddle src='images/smilies/neutral.gif' alt='Neutral'>
