Canada-Greece to be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet

The Canadian Soccer Association has announced that the upcoming Men's International Friendly match featuring Canada and Greece will be broadcast live coast to coast on Rogers Sportsnet ONE as well as streamed live on sportsnet.ca. The Canadian match will be broadcast on Wednesday 9 February at 10.00 ET / 07.00 PT (17.00 local kick off in Larissa, Greece).
Canadian supporters can tune-in early at 09.30 ET / 06.30 PT as Sportsnet will feature a special 30-minute season preview show prior to the start of the match. The match will be replayed on Sportsnet Ontario (20.00 ET), Sportsnet West (23.30 MT) and Sportsnet Pacific (23.30 PT).
"We are pleased to have Rogers Sportsnet broadcasting our National Men's Team taking on #10 ranked Greece in Larissa this coming Wednesday, February 9," stated Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary Peter Montopoli. "This high profile match is a great way for Canadians to support our National Teams and for the Canadian Soccer Association to enter into its new partnership with Umbro as our National Men's Team wear their new kit for the first time."
Canada is preparing for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which runs this 5 to 25 June in 13 cities across USA. The 9 February contest is the first available date on the FIFA international schedule for 2011. Canada will announce its roster for the match on Thursday 3 February.
The 9 February contest will also be the first match that Canada wears its new Umbro kit. The distinct Umbro kit which features a chevron aesthetic on the front was recently unveiled to Canadian supporter groups in Toronto. Canadian fans will have the opportunity to purchase the new Canadian kits starting on 1 June 2011.

Christine Sinclair is confident she speaks for her teammates when she says she wants Carolina Morace to remain as coach of the Canadian women's soccer team.
Morace recently sent a letter of resignation to the Canadian Soccer Association stating her intention to quit following the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, which runs from June 26 to July 17 in Germany.

Greece beats Canada in soccer friendly

Giannis Fetfatzidis scored in the 63rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive miscue, to give Greece a 1-0 win over Canada in exhibition soccer play Wednesday in Larissa.
Defender Adam Straith misplayed a cross right into the path of the diminutive midfielder who hammered the ball into the top corner with his left foot.
Canada came on in the dying minutes but was unable to pull even before a near sellout crowd at the AEL FC Arena. And then with Canada pressing and goalkeeper Milan Borjan up in the offensive zone, the Greeks almost scored into the empty net from just inside the Canadian half — only to have the ball roll just wide of the post.
Dwayne De Rosario came close to tying it in the 74th minute, forcing veteran Greek 'keeper Costas Chalkias to tip a long-range free kick over the bar. Rob Friend headed a corner just wide in the 87th minute.

To that end the CSA, soccer's governing body in Canada, has reached out to Morace and is trying to set up a face-to-face meeting with the Italian-born manager in order to listen to her concerns and try to convince her to reconsider her resignation.

Sinclair and the Canadian women's soccer team recently retained legal counsel in a dispute with the Canadian Soccer Association, the sport's governing body in Canada. The players have threatened to file an arbitration suit over how they are paid with the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada.

Hastings announces soccer retirement

One of Canadian soccer's most loyal servants is calling it a day.
Defender Richard Hastings officially announced his retirement on Friday, bringing an end to a professional career that saw him play in Scotland, Austria and the Netherlands.
Hastings, a 33-year-old native of Prince George, B.C., most recently played for Hamilton Academical after spending the majority of his club career with fellow Scottish outfit Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
"I would like to thank the Canadian Soccer Association and particularly the coaches that I have played under for giving me the opportunity to represent Canada," Hastings said in a statement. "I have many highlights, memories and friendships to be thankful for throughout my international career.

After helping deliver Canada's 2015 Women's World Cup book to FIFA House in Zurich on Tuesday, general secretary Peter Montopoli remained in Europe to meet with Morace, who is currently running a Canadian team camp in Rome.
Citing differences with the CSA, Morace announced earlier this month that she was stepping down as coach after this summer's World Cup.
That prompted the national team to threaten a boycott of international matches unless its Italian coach returns to the fold. Canada is slated to compete at the Cyprus Cup starting at the end of the month.
The Canadian women have also retained a lawyer in their bid to secure a longterm compensation deal with the association.

CBC, Sportsnet team up for Women's World Cup

CBC announced Thursday it is joining forces with Rogers Sportsnet to provide coverage of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
For the first time in history every match of the tournament, which this year takes place from June 26 to July 17, will be broadcast live in Canada.
CBC's coverage begins on June 26 when Canada opens the tournament against host Germany.
The partnership will see CBC air all matches involving Canada live, including three of the four quarter-finals, one semifinal, the bronze-medal match and the final.
Rogers Sportsnet will air one quarter-final match live, and provide encore broadcasts of one quarterfinal, one semifinal, the bronze-medal match and the final.
Rogers Sportsnet will present live coverage of matches not involving Canada in the earlier rounds of the tournament. The network will also produce nightly wrap-up shows.
CBC will produce the match broadcasts using on-air personalities from both networks.
"World Cup level soccer continues to grow in popularity, so it was important to us to be able to offer Canadians the full slate of matches in the FIFA Women's World Cup," said David Masse, senior director of CBC Sports.
"We're pleased to partner with Rogers Sportsnet to use our combined resources to provide outstanding and unprecedented coverage."
Scott Moore, president of Rogers Broadcasting, also heralded the partnership.
