Where's the "none of the above" category?
Thanos @ Sun May 06, 2018 11:50 pm
Rogue One.
Found Last Jedi in the library. Glad I didn't pay money for it. That one stunk. Don't care if there's another after that.
I rank them as follows, from best to worst:
1) A New Hope
2) Return Of The Jedi/Rogue One
3) The Empire Strikes Back
4) Revenge Of The Sith
5) Attack Of The Clones
6) The Phantom Menace
7) The Force Awakens
I haven't seen The Last Jedi as of yet. (waiting for it on Netflix)
-J.
My gut instinct is Empire Strikes Back, but Rogue One was pretty awesome! I'll call it a tie.
After that, Last Hope, Return of the Jedi and then five other crap movies in no particular order - two that just re-hash the original trilogy and the terrible prequels.
Anything with Captain Kirk.

Rogue One.
I agree.

Empire and rogue one are pretty much even for me.

I agree.

The films that are in the SW universe with the basic background and history have more room to breathe and aren't chained up by the rigid structures of the six main movies. Solo could be quite refreshing too, just like Rogue One was, just because it will predate the prequels and that will give them lots of freedom to create something new. Having Ron Howard as the director won't hurt either.

I found that watching the prequels one after the other over a couple of days, in addition to wearing headphones, made them vastly better than watching them on commercial TV. I won't mention Jar-Jar aside to say that he was unforgivable and we were lucky he only fucked up the one prequel instead of all three. They're still admittedly flawed, mostly by the awful prose that Lucas started making the actors recite (beginning with Return Of The Jedi IMO), but in terms of overall story and acting they deserve more appreciation that they've received over time. Crushing on Jake Lloyd is kind of unfair considering he was like ten years old when he was cast for Phantom. And Hayden Christiansen was alright too as Anakin - watch his part again where he kills the Tusken Raiders in Clones and the fight with Obi-Wan in Sith (where both times he was just filled with absolute hatred) and the kid didn't do such a bad job. I also seriously regard the feeling of mounting dread in ROTS in the hour or so before Anakin sided with Palpatine as one of the finest things in all the movies in terms of outright genuine emotion; the only thing that's come close was the stern chase in The Last Jedi where we were basically watching the near-total extermination of the Resistance. Once again it was the terrible prose and absolutely ridiculous romance angle that Lucas inserted that dealt the worst blows to all three of those films that have damaged them in people's memories over the years.

For me, it's the story inconsistencies. Anakin was too old to apprentice, but Luke and Rey were fine?
And where T.F. did the 'First Order' come from?

The problem with Phantom Menace wasn't Jake Lloyd or Jar-Jar Binks (okay, maybe Jar jar was a little problem), it was that it was BORING. I'd rather watch C-Span than most of that movie. I saw it ain the middle of the night when they had screenings 24/7 and almost fell asleep during the boring Senate parts. I was also pissed off that they killed Darth Maul - he was the coolest villan the universe has had since Darth Vader (he was way more interesting than Kylo Muppet is). The only redeeming part of Phantom is the final duel with Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi, which is one of the best light sabre battles in the entire series IMHO.
Attack of the Clones was just a bad movie, especially after Anakin slaughtered all those Tuskins - he admits he committed an atrocity and Padme just falls into his arms in love?!? WTF?!? No seriously, WTF?!? Lucas should have talked to Nora Ephron or some other rom-com writer about how to write romance (although I doubt his ego would've allowed that), as the 'romance' in the prequels is just terrible. IMHO, Yoda was also laughable as a Jedi Master, jumping around like a cat on hot tin roof.
Revenge of the Sith wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either and just wasn't strong enough to redeem the two shitty movies which preceded it. I'd been so let down by the first two movies, that I waited to watch it on DVD six months after its release.
Another big problem the prequels had was relying on terrible CGI - those battles would have been much better if they were shot with models like ALL the big set pieces in the original trilogy.

The First Order was basically the remnant of the Empire that refused to sign the peace treaty with the New Republic after the battle of Jakku ended the civil war. The Republic never gained enough control over a large part of the old Imperial territories and those areas provided the space and resources for the remains of Palpatines military forces to recover, rebuild, and re-launch themselves as the fanatical First Order. It's basically a parallel to Germany from World War One to World War Two, where their defeat on the battlefield wasn't enough to end them as a menace because their home territories were never conquered and occupied.
As for Anakin initially being refused for training by the Jedi Council, their hand was forced when Qui-Gon Jinn said he'd train the boy himself with or without the council's approval or assistance. This was an example of the arrogance, complacency, and hubris (as older Luke described it to Rey) that were the seeds of the destruction of the Jedi; they'd simply become so hidebound in most of their thinking that couldn't see what their enemies like Palpatine, Dooku, and finally Anakin were doing right in front of them. Obi-Wan in exile trained Luke, in the small amount of time they spent together, because he no longer had to live by the rules of the now-extinct Jedi Order; it's not like Obi-Wan had much choice either because Vader had done such a thorough job in the previous years of exterminating surviving Jedi and other light-side Force-sensitives that someone as potentially powerful as Luke couldn't be cast aside and ignored. Ditto too with Rey when hermit Luke finally saw he had to do what he could to help her because the First Order had become so dangerous and close to victory.

I'd put those legit complaints down to George Lucas having fifteen years after ROTJ to overthink things in that swollen head of his.

I liked the Yoda battle with Dooku. It was nice to see what a full-master Jedi could do in a duel. Plus it foreshadowed, with the parts of the fight where he was having trouble against Dooku, that Yoda would lose to Palpatine in ROTS due to his advancing age causing him to be overpowered. As for slaughtering the Tuskens I think that was a critical part of the story because it showed how deep the depths of Anakin's anger and hate could be. It was his first major step towards the darkness without Obi-Wan present there at that moment to contain him. Padme's reaction was either-or, I guess. It was consistent that she would stick with her friend even if he did something awful instead of crying over the deaths of a pack of crazed vicious savages like the Tuskens.

I did the same. But time sort of heals some wounds and presumptions, which is why I chose to watch all three prequels in short order. It helped overcome the problems the four-year gaps between films caused because too long of a break in between them led me to forgetting too much of the good parts as well as giving me too much time to over-concentrate on the bad ones.

I agree with that to a large extent, even though it's not reasonable to think that they'd ever go back to a mostly-model film-making process. That kind of model-building is probably a lost art now, never to be seen again. And the CGI is so much better now than it was even ten years ago that I'd bet even Lucas would love the chance to re-shoot all of the movies with improved CGI just to erase the fuck-ups from existence.

See, that would be something you'd put into the movie! The rest of us were left to guess. Star Trek has had ?13? movies and 27 seasons of TV to explain their universe. Not nearly as many of these plot holes in it.
